Computer will not enter standby automatically

Hi,

I have a PC that I use as a media center attached to my TV running Windows 7 RC and it worked perfectly until about a week ago when I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 and placed them both in the same Homegroup. Every since then the Media Center will not enter standby mode either automatically, after 10 minutes as configured or from the MC remote control. To get it to enter standby I have to select "sleep" from the WMC "tasks" menu.

As it only happened since creating the Homegroup I am assuming it is something to do with that, but I may be wrong. The MC PC is set to the "Balanced" power profile.

Any ideas?

On the MC PC go to
Start-> "Type Change When The Computer Sleeps-> Enter->Chane what is necessary!

Thanks for the suggestion but like I said, that is set to 10 minutes and it doesn't sleep.

Sonce it only started happening after homegroup im wondering if something in networking is keeping it awake. You have a normal setup cable modem, router, PC?

I have wifi route on an ADSL connection with both the MC and laptop connecting using wifi. This is as it was configured prior to upgrading my laptop to Win7 and setting up the homegroup as well.

What probably happened is that WMP is now trying to index the files on your laptop - all the media files that it finds that you have associated on the laptop via the homegroup. My guess is that if you left it for several hours, then it would finally figure out there is nothing left to index, and would finally exit out of your processes list - and the compute would go to sleep.

My only suggestion is to get back out of the homegroup, an if you need access to the laptop, instead of using a home group, use Remote Desktop.

of course, once it has everything indexed, it may work faster later on - you can try to leave it on and see how long it lasts before going to sleep - but that may end up being expensive if electricity is not cheap where you live.

I don't think it is that as I have all but the "start menu" indexing off and I have had both PC's on for many hours at the same time and the laptop doesn't really have any media on it.

I did however find a setting under the Power Options that might be related. If you go into the "Advanced Settings" there is a sub item for "Multimedia settings" and under this there is a setting called "When sharing media". This item has three options:

Prevent idling to sleep (the default setting)
Allow the computer to sleep
Allow the computer to enter Away Mode

I have tried changing this from the default setting to "Allow the computer to sleep" but it still doesn't make any difference.

Also the fact the only way to get it to sleep is to select "sleep" from the tasks menu in Media Center and not by press the sleep button the remote is a bit strange as well.

Any other ideas?
