A long time ago I tried using Gmail with Outlook. Performance was very slow. I can't remember but I think I configured it using IMAP. I have thousands of emails that I want to use Outlook to view and organize it instead of Gmail. I don't want it to archive any emails on my local drive so when I use webmail I can view everything. Do you know if the performance has improved? Does Outlook not work well with Gmail? Would having an Outlook.com email address instead have great performance? I have Office 365 if that matters.

To do what you want you will need to use IMAP not POP3.

Do you know if the performance has improved?

The performance is based on several things. Your internet connection speed and the speed of the mail server at the other end have a lot to do with it.

Does Outlook not work well with Gmail?

Outlook 2010/2013 work really well using IMAP to connect to gmail and other IMAP accounts.

It appears that Google has improved IMAP at their end. This is probably due to that fact the own the Android OS that powers a lot of smart phones.

Maybe. Maybe not. You would have to test it to see if it has better performance with your PC and internet connection.

Are you running Outlook 2010 or 2013?

In my Outlook 2010 I have POP3, IMAP, and gmail with IMAP accounts all set up . I don't really see any performance differences with email between the different types of accounts.

I concur - I use Outlook 2010 to access several accounts, incl. Gmail, using POP3. Its flawless.

For a reason I won't go into, I have a Gmail account but have another pop account setup on my Outlook. Any email that goes to my Gmail account I have it forwarded from Gmail to Outlook. You might try that to see if it makes any difference for you.
