Purchased on new Toshiba computer and on the second login while logging out it showed 51 upgrades that were needed....today for the last 2 1/2 hours the following has been on my screen:

Preparing to configure Windows...
Do not turn off your computer

How long is this process supposed to take?

I thought it may take a while because there were 51 upgrades....

Any suggestions? Can I turn it off?

I suggest you wait. Wait overnight if required. If its still configuring at the end of that time, heres what you can do:

1. Hold down the power button and switch of your machine
2. Restart your computer and just before windows boots hit the F8 button
3. Boot into safe mode
4. login
5. Make sure that any virus scanners at this point are disabled before continuing
6. Click "Start" > "Accessories" > "System Restore"
7. Click "Next"
8. Pick a restore point and then click next, (pick one before you started the update)
9. Click next and follow the prompts and it will start a system restore
10. Wait till your computer finishes the System Restore process

Once you have recovered from the trauma, change the windows updates settings to download but not install. Then install one by one or in small batches.
