so what the heck, is cyberlink in cahoots with the media industry? should I not be able to run a 2011 bluray disk via powerdvd7.3 and have to chuck 100 bucks to get this working again? I have been able to run bluray in this version before (Terminal Salvation). I'm sorry I don't keep up with updates and just expect things to work, crazy consumer I am. It's not a defective ROM this LG CH08NLS10, so you can get that out of your pretty little heads right now :p ? is there any wonder why I haven't gone all Highdef yet? what' could be wrong? I wanna watch Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher get it on!!!! Waahhhh!!

what error are you getting? I had an issue with this myself, newer blu-rays have copy protection on them called HDCP, which prevents them from being played on many computers. I found that running AnyDVD from SlySoft in the background removes this protection, the only thing short of getting new HDCP hardware that seems to do the trick.

It has a backup function that should allow you to back up the disc to a folder on your HD.

It can handle most BluRay discs.

I've gotten OEM versions of PowerDVD bundled with drives.

I've had very little joy from them.

As I watch DVDs and BluRay disks on a 40" LCD (1920X1080), I haven't persued reliable software for vieiwing on my PC. (Win7 supports DVDs. I wonder if they'l add BluRay to the next Microsoft consumer OS?)

As mentioned, you may need to update the software.

Newer BD discs sometimes have a newer version of copy protection on them, and may not be able to play if the software is too dated.

Even regular BluRay players recommend you connect to the internet so it can update firmware from time to time, for the same reason.

OEM versions of bundled software are usually very limited in what they can do and usually prompt you to update to the full product.

Once you have the BluRay backed up to HD you can play it with most anything since the protection is removed. For example VLC, SPlayer, Splash Lite will all play BluRay content along with avi,divx,mp4 yadda yadda.

Once you have the files on the HD then you're not limited to decrypting players.

Also if you have a networked set top box, MakeMKV has a built in server(don't know the details for the protocols as I don't use this feature but you can find out on MakeMKV forum.)

http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/index.php

The software is still technically in "beta" but I bought a license over a year ago. It's constantly being updated. The main advantage of a license is that you can go back to earlier versions(say if an update introduces a bug) that the beta license key won't allow. All the features are fully enabled.

edit: just to avoid confusion, on BluRay MakeMKV has 2 functions. One is extract titles as .mkv files. The other is back up the disc to a BluRay folder structure on the HD with the protections removed. The 2nd function is what I'm talking about.
