Connect 2 laptops with crossover cable

Hi,

So I bought a crossover cable just to connect two laptops. Like, a network. Mine is running on windows 7 and the other laptop is running on Vista. So I configured both laptops to be in the same workgroup (left the homegroup in win7) and configured both NIC's to have an IP in the same class - one of them is 10.1.1.1 and the other one is 10.1.1.2 and subnet masks are the same 255.255.255.0. Now, I should be able to ping each of the laptops. But it pings only from Vista (10.1.1.2) to Win7 (10.1.1.1) and not the other way. Network window in win7 shows some computers in the different network, but in the same building, but does not show the laptop connected with the crossover cable. Network window in win vista does not show any computers. Both computers have some shared folders (for users Guest and Everyone).

I would really like to know what am I doing wrong, and how do I connect these two computers so I could easily transfer some files?

Are you certain that the firewall is configured to allow ECHO REQUESTS on the Vista box. If you cannot ping it, it may be the Windows firewall preventing it from responding.

Turned off firewalls on both computers for the time that was needed to transfer the file. That worked. Thank you very much.

Are you running win 7 firewall? any forewall/av app? If you have them connected with a null modem (crossover) cable how are they seeing other coomputers wifi?

Do a repair of connections on both systems and don't touch the ip's.

If it doesn't work disable them both, unpin the cables and reconnect them after at least for 10 seconds
If it doesn't work do that all over again and restart BOTH laptops!

Here's a checklist of things for ICS and file sharing for 2 croslinked computers (in my case a Windows 7 and XP one):

- both computers set to the same workgroup
- restarts
- advanced sharing settings - all things turned on (network discovery etc.) except for password protected sharing
- bridged the connection with the internet
- turned on Internet Connection Sharing for the internet connection - this forced an ip to the other connection (192.168.137.1) and gave an option to select which connection should have access to the ICS (the second connection or the bridge - you choose the second / crosslinked cable connection)
- shared some folders on both computers
- worked instantly (the other pc aquired a correct ip and internet)
