connecting two pcs together

I have tow a full size pc and a laptop I joined the together yesturday and they worked.
wever when I tunred on one of the PC did not work. Note the key board lights on the
monitor work.
could somr one he please help.

Might help if you described how they are "joined together".

Does this mean some kind of KVM switch plugged into both?

OR does this mean a crossover networked cable plugged into both?
