Connection speed astronomically slow

a couple days ago or so i hopped on bf3, and reallized that it was going super slow, i got on fb, and pages werent loading, i whent to speedtest.net and that took awhile to load also, so i finnaly ran a speed test, TWC gave me a 26.6 mbps download and .96 upload. that is astronomically slow seeing as how i am running a wired connection on a 50mbps connection. i ran anti virus, came up with nothing, i am cleaning up trash and have reset the network multiple timee, i am running out of options if some one knows somthing else i might try id appreciate it

Actually, that should be pretty fast, Thornton.

I have a 5.15 Mbps connection speed, and it isn't too shabby. Perhaps there is something else going on here.

thank you, i just found it odd, ive never been below 38 EVER befer with a wired connection on this pc, its not whether or not it is still a good connection (although thank you) its that that sudden drop in a matter of minutes worries me. its bad when my phone is pulling a faster speed test than my pc. thank you for the link i will check it out. ultimately, i just dont know why WVERYTHING on the web is lagging, bf3, face book, g mail, even seven forums here took a while to load

As Dustsailor says, 26Mbs is pretty fast and in comparison to his and mine (at around 3Mbs) should load pages almost instantly - problem is, once you are used to a particular speed and performance if it goes down or doesn't work as well, it is really noticable.

sometimes when there is heavy internet traffic, you will experience temporary decreases. It should go back to normal before long. If it doesn't, let me know.

Is it still happening? If so, and if you are using a wireless connection, attempt to use a wired connection and see if the problem persists.

You can download a newer and a slightly older version of your wireless adapter driver off the internet. Uninstall your current one after that, and test both versions (starting with the newer first) to see if there is any improvement (installation). If you want to try the older version, uninstall the new one you had just installed.

Let me know if any of this works at all

as stated in the first post i use wired, it is a 95ft cord but nothing has changed to it, yes it is ifnact still happening, its bad when web pages look like text with borders, no css or ecma rendering for like 30 seconds on 1 in 5 web pages that are information intense

i use chrome and opera, not much room for a shorter cord unfortunately, i am about 85 ft from the box. wierless is SOOOO SLOW its unreal on my pc, i already know this and thats why i switched to wired in the first place and that origonally more than trippled my spped in my opinion

There should be no reason why wireless would slow your computer down so much, unless you have a slower wireless adapter and/or router.

You might temporarily try plugging your wired cable into the modem instead of the router to test if your internet speed picks up that way or not. However, do be careful, becaue you are more susceptible to attacks this way.

wireless is slower because of the materials of our house and flooring, it slows down the signal, we have a 1 floor differance and 85ft. as a gamer, believe me when i say, wired is the way to go, i cant tell you how many times ive had drivers crash while im in the middle of a game. plus, when i get my killer xeno card, im gunna need wired anyways

i will look into trying my connection on my modem, but i have to say im finding this to be more and more software related the more i look into it. ive ran anti virus and thats not an issue as far as i can tell, im running sata2 which shouldnt be a problem iether but i could see windows responding slower than my internet connection being a possible problem

Trust me when I say it is the type of wireless adapter that determines how good a signal you get (provided you pay for a large chunk of broadband, as you do). And I've never had a wireless driver crash in my life.

ill try disabling it, i use trend micro, and i often have it disabled anyways for the sure ammount of ram it uses. i can only speak from experience when i say that i have 4/5 bars 85 ft away when it is up stairs and 2-3/5 bars when the modem is in my basement. supposedly i was using a linksis high speed wireless chip, but to be honest, it was hp that slapped it on there for 80 bucks so i dont know. i have had wireless drivers fail CONSTANTLY if i try and force too much infor mation on too low of a connection, it often happens while intense gaming. ive seen a slight boost in internet speed for browsing by using crome. i wont worie too much more about this, im upgrading to windows 7 professional soon and i think that will help, but please if anyone else has any ideas of how i might be able to fix this let me know

Would a pair of power line adapters (home plugs) be worse than a 90ft ethernet cable ? You can get 200Mbs ones now and can be useful in situations like this where router and PC are far apart. Just a thought.

Yeah, like golden says probably CAT6 would be something better to try than home plugs although 100ft of that cable may be expensive.
