I know the SQL 2000 client is not compatible with Win 7. However, we have a program that just uses an ODBC connection to the SQL 2000 database. If the application runs in 7, it should be able to talk to the 2000 database without damaging it, correct? When asked that specific question, here is how the vendor replied:

"We are just finishing up certification of Windows 7 with XXX Xxxxxxxxxx, but it is not completed yet. If Microsoft does not support the SQL 2000 Client on Windows 7 then you will need to consider upgrading your SQL Server to 2005 or 2008. Microsoft support for SQL 2000 is expired as well. (We all knew this part)

So, you will need to wait a bit before using XXX Xxxxxxxxxx on this machine if it is upgraded to Windows 7 and it may not support SQL 2000 at all.
"

First off, they did not answer the question. Second, I have installed a dozen of the clients, and not once did it install the actual SQL 2000 client, I only had to setup an ODBC connection to the SQL server. Thanks!

Josemo,

I am unable to connect Win7 Ent to a full SQL Server 2000 using ODBC. How did you manage this.

Thank you,
Randy
