Consistent BSOD after new PC build

Hey Guys,

I just purchased new components to build my own PC. I had an offer from Windows to upgrade to Windows 7, so I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64bit from Windows XP Professional 32bit.

I have been having issues with blue screens ever since the upgrade has installed. It was a clean install in order to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit. Basically I had to format the drive, install Windows XP Pro 32bit then immediately upgraded and did the clean install option for Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

After installing everything, things ran smoothly for a good hour and then I shut the PC down for the night. The next morning I woke up and powered it back on, and within 30 minutes I received my first blue screen while downloading a graphics driver.

After that I received a blue screen once during a game and twice during installation of various drivers and programs.

After the first 4 blue screens I changed the following:
AVG was completely removed from the system
nForce drivers were upgraded via nVidia's website scan
removed 2x2GB of ram, leaving 2x2GB still in

I again received a blue screen while playing a game, about an hour after playing. I shut the PC down, removed power and swapped the 2x2GB with the previously removed sticks, powered back up.

Again, received a blue screen with the other sticks of ram about 1 1/2 hours into a game.

I am not sure this entirely rules out my ram, but I am confused what is causing these errors. I left my PC running all night tonight and woke up to it functioning fine (it hasn't crashed or blue screened).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Update - I found on another post a cmd tool to fully remove AVG, so I ran that tool to make sure everything was cleared then rebooted the pc.

I installed Battlefield:Bad Company 2 this morning, and received another blue screen, my novice eyes looking at the dumpfile it appears to be the same 124 error.

I ran cmd sfc /scannow and it came up 100% with no violations.

I will be reinstalling the other 4gb of ram as I don't think this is the issue (correct me if I'm wrong).

You really need to think about going into your bios and adjusting the voltage and memory settings. These enthusiast boards are not plug and play, they will only perform as well as you adjust them. Adjusting the bios settings is standard procedure for an enthusiast board. You can't get by without it.

For 8GB memory you will definately need to up the NB voltage some and also make sure your memory voltage and timings are set to spec. You can usually get workable specs from overclocking and memory forums. Do not use games as a stablity test.

You should make the appropiate adjustments in bios then run a real stablity test like Prime 95 Blend test if you want your new system to be truely stable.

I checked online to no avail about adjusting my mobo specifically in terms of voltages for various things.

I did change my voltage for the ram to match as well as all timings to match the manufacturers specs.

I am having difficulty understanding what to adjust on this mobo, i don't want to cause damage to any of the components while diagnosing the issue, but I read that with 8 gigs you want to crank up with cpu nb and ht or something along those lines?

Anyone who has in-depth knowledge wish to comment on what to do at this stage to make sure all my bios settings are good?

Just finished a fresh install of Win7. Only thing I installed was graphics driver and updated nforce driver as per nvidia's autodetect tool.

Blue screened again.

I am going to try settings in bios again then probably have to RMA this board i think...

I'm pretty stumped. I ran memtest86 with all 4 sticks of ram in, and i came up with 1000+ errors during tests 5,6,7 and 8.

I rebooted with just 1 stick of ram in, and ran memtest86 again for 4 hours with 0 errors whatsoever.

Go on, play a game with that 1gig in, and I get bluescreened again, same error 0x124 stop.

I don't understand why I get a bluescreen after 30mins to 2 hours into a game? It seems to me that if there was an actual piece of hardware that was faulty it would bluescreen immediately or lock up more frequently?

I put all 4 sticks of memory back in, and am currently playing a game again. Smooth again for 2 hours, then a bluescreen... Same stop 0x124.

Any ideas?

You need to test each stick of RAM individually, and you need to test each slot as well, with a stick that has passed with no errors... This is a time consuming process, but necessary to iron out a memory problem... replace any RAM that reports errors ... Hope this helps...

A 124 stop is always hardware. If it isnt memory we have to start trying other things

Received 2 different Bugcheck errors last night, was wondering if this could shed light on the issue some more?

I did try each stick individually, and although some pass memtest86 without any errors, I still get a bluescreen.

I also swapped my graphics card for an old graphics card that I know worked from a previous system, I received a bluescreen with that as well. Unplugged the CDrom completely and received a bluescreen after that.

I believe it's narrowed down to either Memory, Motherboard, or Harddrive.

Let me know if any new information can come from these recent dumpfiles, thanks again, the help is greatly appreciated.

yes some of the memory did not give me a bluescreen, I have only one stick in currently, which is the one that ran for 4 hours without any errors.

I am rebooting with seatools now to run that.

I ran MSI Live Update and everything is current driverwise.

The motherboard was purchased open-box on newegg, which is my only cause of concern for this item.

I do have another motherboard available that I can swap out, but I was hoping to avoid messing with that swap unless I know for a fact it's the motherboard that's faulty.

According to the web site you can only update your bios through the live update function. 7576v41.zip (This BIOS can only update via Live Update function.) This bios came out on 4/30/10 so might be worth installing. Second link is a review of your board.

I have the NF980-G65, but maybe I can use the same site to check for the reviews?

Also, I used their live update to make sure my bios was up to date, which they state it is.

I ran the long test and it passed with no errors.

Does this rule out the hard-drive?

With all RAM in, please run a memory test.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

I did run memtest86 with all 4 sticks of ram and test 5 6 7 8 came back with over 1000 errors total.
