I had this problem many times long time ago but they were all solved by removing norton firewall, removing AVG firewall, updating firmware, but this time i am stuck and the problem is back.

the problem is that Windows 7 Ultimate LAPTOP cannot get into XP DESKTOP shared folder/printer that's on share mode and XP cannot get to 7 public folders

the Network path cannot be found. impossible as it had worked before, something is just up.

well recently, AVG IS trial had been downgraded to AVG Free so that could be a factor.
i dont knwo what else i had done to make this happen.

All sharing settings are correct (havent been cahnged since i made it work last time)
and both computers are under workgroup name WORKGROUP

this time, the XP computer just wont show up...

plus i can see the VISTA Laptop (not an issue but just saying) on my network..

Any suggestions?????????
The network connection just makes it easier to print wirelessly and share files between XP/7
THanks!@

It may help your XP machine to show up if you first install XP sp3 and also the hotfix which seems to help make XP machines show up on the network and also the network map. Link for the hotfix below.
Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP

After going through all of that if you are still having file access problems try doing this registry adjustment on the Win 7 machines. It may also help to run the network set up wizard on the XP machine again.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

Once you start messing with A/V's and third party firewalls things can get messed up in a hurry and it's hard to say exactly which one of them might be causing the problem.

isnt the hotfix for network map??

either way, i installed it earlier cause of other network problems

as for the registry key, i actually did that step before posting as i was searching for a solution, but no luck.

hm maybe this is the rpoblem: i wanted to try out the free comodo firewall but it failed to install... so i just uninstalle it and deleted it... now im stuck forever!

One other thing to check is that you have to use the advanced sharing on the XP machines as win7 does not support simple sharing, as is utilized with the sharing wizard, (it sometimes will work if the NTFS permissions on the both machines happen to match but it is not reliable)

From your post I would assume that you have already checked this but if not it's worthwhile checking

Yes but it's also been known to help XP machines show up on the network as well otherwise,... I would not have posted it. :)

Anything having to do with third party firewalls will also cause these types of problems X10. So my suggestion is not to use them, the Windows firewall works perfectly fine as is.

oh i remember what the problem was when i tried to install it earlier
it says "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update."

and as for third party firewalls, i don't have any on, i just hope that comodo accident didnt do anything to my windows firewall as my windows firewall is currently active...
weired!!!

Have not got access to XP machine at the moment but right clicking on the folder in explorer and selecting the sharing tab should present an advanced sharing button - you need to share the folder and set the ntfs permissions to give the usernames on win7 the access you wish to allow them

Sorry i didnt get an advanced sharing button in Windows XP Sharing tab :(

and I would have to do this to the Public (shared ) folder
What i want to share is mainly the printer (the folder should be automatically shareed with the printer somehow)

UPDATE: in my workgroup on Windows 7 Laptop, the DESKTOP pc shows up but when i double click it, it produces the same error that the network path cannot be found.
if it cannot be found then how can it be in my workgroup?!
