Constant Freezing and slow boot up

Hi again, yet another problem :(

I came to my pc and it froze after about 10 seconds of usage, so powered it down. Came to it later and powered it up. It took at least 15minutes for my pc to display desktop icons from the moment i pushed the button. It usually takes 2-4 minutes (since my PC is just in the minimum spec range)

Well, whenever its unfroze, i can use it for about 10-20 seconds, before the progrms im using are "not responding". I have CPU and RAM widget, and once the PC is froze my RAM shows around 48% and CPU around 1-10. However, once unfrozen this is between 60-100%.

Any ideas why it could be constantly freezing.

plan: Running a full virus scan with MSE, which should take some time due to it keep stopping due to PC freezing, which also temperarily stops scanning process.

Get latest updates, which may also take some time due to freezing issues

any help is appeciated

James

Try running a Virus Scan on it. Your RAM is only 1.5 Gig, but it should still run OK, not like what is happening. If you don't have a Virus Scan, go here and get a free one. AVG Free - Antivirus Download | Free Software Also try Defrag, that might help. Let us know how things go. Thanks,

Captain Zero. If that is Microsoft Security Essentials, i am already scanning with it.

Thanks for the support so far though, its appreciated. The bar is currently 1/6th the way across, and about an hour gone :|. 70GB of data so im guessing i better leave it overnight? (Surely there is a way to pause the scan and start again on next boot up?)

No pausing with MS Essentials, close everything down (IE especially) and let it chew overnight.

Hello IHaydees you should run a diagnostic on both hard drive and memory. I have a Compac Presario C700 that wa crashing and freezing. Also was getting unusually hot when air seemed to be moving through the heatsink very well.

Turns out the heat is coming from the HD and diagnostics of the HD revealed many failures.

Your syptoms are similar.

Is the laptop getting unsually hot?

Hello IHaydees.

It could also be that you have something starting up when the PC is booted that is causing problems; have a look at the tutorial at the link below to get some ideas.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. "Joel406" its a desktop pc, so not really getting any overheating problems.

I shall try some diagnostics test, however the scan is complete, and it said i had 6 severe trojans :|.

Maybe these are reasons why it was slow? I have cleared them.

I will try some other things, and see how it is in the morning (from the UK you see :) )

P.S Sorry its in the wrong part of the forum.

EDIT: However, the trojans were all on my E:/ drive, which is the 2nd backup hard drive (not good i know). So could these have caused the crashes, even if theyre on a different hard drive

I must have misread. Sorry.

But Hardware diagnostics are still a good idea.

UPDATE -

I got rid of this problem. Did a virus scan and all seemed ok. I have had my firewall on, and downloaded nothing and the problem is back. What i see weird is that once the computer freezes, the CPU is showing around 2-10%... surely if it was freezing it would be more like 100%? The RAM also shows around a constant 48-65%

Im starting to beleive my processor is on its way out? Surely it shouldnt even be going below 10% with just running w7, on a single core.

thanks in advance

James

Ive also noticed that one i restart, i have to re-login to websites i would have previously logged in, EG Facebook, i have to sign in again.

I also reboothed and it said something along the lines of "Read Disk Error" or something, "Press Cntrl+Alt+Del to Reboot".

James, when my computer was freezing due to graphics card, it would freeze at whatever the CPU was doing at the time. It might have 8% or 60% and everything in between. It was never at 100%. And my RAM usage was in the same range as you describe. All this is simply to say, it may not be your processor.
