Constantly Trying to Update

Two days ago I did a clean install of Win 7 Pro. After the install which took much longer than normal, I spent several hours updating. I am guessing that it took 4 hours or more to before it told me there were no new "important" updates.

Since then at nearly every shutdown or restart, I get the message that new updates are being installed and when it restartes, it spends a lot of time configuring the updates.

This morning, after all those up dates I get the message "New updates are availible. The update was for SP1. It's first attempt to install the update failed. I told it to "try again". For the last half hour it has been trying to download the update again and was still sitting at 0%. I finally stopped the download and rebooted.

I know this computer has a problem which I believe is either a bad hard drive or a bad controller on the mother board. I will be taking it to get checked out soon.

I guess my question is "after installing all those updates", why would it then try to install SP1?

I have been running Win 7 now for a few years and have installed it on several computers and have never seen it do this.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

One other thing, I tried to set updates to "notify me and let me decide" and for some reason I can never get that option.

Already have this download and burned to a CD. I will run it and see what happens.

With the problems I have been having recently with this pc, I have been discussing it with my PC Guru and together we came to these conclusions.

Method 1: Perform a System File Checker

Will do this after trying to install SP1.

Method 2: Run the System Update Readiness Tool

Have not tried this but will if SP1 will install.

It is not that I ever see an error message. It is the way the computer is acting. It has wiped out (erased, gone, cant see) one complete partition causing me to lose valuable information. Once PC is started, it is very unstable (balky and slow) for an hour or so (it may eventually settle down or may not). Some programs will NOT open at times (at other times they work perfectly). It is just a lot of problems I have never seen before with this PC (even after reinstalling updating windows 3 days ago). I am almost positive it has to be a part of the PC gone or going bad.

OK I have installed SP1. I used the windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe I had downloaded and it only took 2.5 hours to install (seems like a long time for this).

I know how to run a System File Check but have NO clue how to run "System Update Readiness Tool". Need a little help on that one.

That sounds like infection with the ZeroAccess virus/malware - test with an offline AV such as Windows Defender Offline -

Not needed anymore. SP1 installed succesfully? Only problem is that updates don't DOWNLOAD? Installing them manually (SP1 for example) works great.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service.
2. Delete all files in the Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.
3. Start the Automatic Updates service.

Now try to download the patches again

I doubt even that's needed, Kaktussoft - installing SP1 would normally clean the folder up anyhow
