Continous System Beep During Win 7 Boot

I just got my wife a new laptop for Xmas. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 14". Here are the specs:

Core i3 - 370M
4GB Ram
500 GB HD
Intel Wireless ABG
Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

The first time we started it up, and every time since, the computer does a continuous short/fast beeps once the Starting Windows Screen comes up. It is the black screen that just says "Starting Windows.." The beeping will stop after about 10-15 sec, then the 4 circling dots above the "Starting Windows" screen come up. Then windows will come up normally, and everything seems to work fine.

I have run several tests low level PC-Doctor tests (From a bootable CD) and all of the hardware passes. There are no uninstalled drivers in the Device Manager as well. When I start the computer in Safe mode, the beeping doesn't happen. Also, if I interrupt the windows loading process, by turning it off, then start it up and select "Start Windows Normally" the beeping doesn't happen either.

I also tried formatting the Hard Drive, and installing Win 7 Pro 64-Bit from scratch, and half way through the installation, where it reboots, and starts loading windows, the beeping occurs at that point. I then used the recovery disks, and got the laptop back to factory default settings, and it still happens.

I have never seen a problem like this! Lenovo has a horrible return policy, and they won't let me return it without a 20% restocking fee. They will only offer to repair it, and I rather not send it back to them to look at, so I want to try to fix it myself. For those of you who have read this far...Thank You for your time! I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas on how to troubleshoot fix this. I have a video of the bootup, but it is over 100mb, so I am going to try to shrink it down, and will post a link if I can.

Not familiar with that machine, but I would normally guess it indicates bad ram ( might just be badly seated).

Doesn't seem to be the case here as
Then windows will come up normally, and everything seems to work fine.

Might be best to take it back to the retailer, and get a new machine.

SIW2:
I did try booting it with 2 GB, also tried swapping the ram around, and the beeps continue.

DocBrown:
I thought system beep codes would only happen before windows starts, and not during the windows startup process. I will check Lenovo's website for my machine specific beep codes, its worth a shot.

Also, The CPU stays around 47-50C during stress tests.

Carl:
I will run PC Speccy and post that info up as soon as I can.

Thank you all for your help so far!

oh wow....that is exactly the beep that I had on my Vaio NR360D some months ago. (phoenix bios - I had it twice at start up before it seemed to work it self-out) Getting help from forum members, the first thing I was advised, was to check for any stuck keys and un-install a (then) recent update to the external keyboard. But my machine is over 2 years old. Since its new definitely worth a take back to the retailer to have it checked. I really don't think thats normal....( trust me!!! at least not early in the morning when u turn on the machine half a sleep:eek:)

Sounds like something might have got jarred loose during shipping. One wouldn't expect it to be shipped like that. I would open any quick access panel I could find and re-seat what ever was behind it, RAM, wireless card, modem, hard drive, optical drive too if possible. I'd also check the BIOS and windows to see if the correct amount of RAM is shown. You might even want to reset the BIOS to fail safe defaults. If you do that you will have to go in and reset the date and time, boot order, stuff like that.

Your best option is to send it back to let them repair it ..
Let them figure it out ...if it is so bad they will end up to replace for you rather than fixing it .. i hope .
Good Luck budd.

Sending it back for repair is kind of my last resort, just because I don't like the idea of shipping out a new laptop for repair, and I don't really want some tech monkeying with my Wife's laptop. If it is a hardware failure, I guess it would be best to send it back for repair.

Can you contact them before sending it back?

I can contact them, and have talked to 2 of their techs, and they have never heard of this problem, and said that the only think left to do is send it in for repair.

It is definitely a hardware failure. That is not a beep code, that is the sound of a key being held down when the laptop boots.

I'm sorry, but it will have to go in for repair, unless a key is stuck.

Are you sure?

In the UK we have the Sale of Goods Act.

It overrides any retailer/manufacturer conditions - also makes no difference if the goods were in a sale.

In the UK you would get a brand new replacement by Act of Parliament.

damn, i could use that... here in the states, if you are under 18 and you purchased an item you can return it at any time and get your money back... but that doesnt help me anymore haha. and it normally is hard to prove to the stores until they know about the law...
