Controller issues

I bought a generic controller for my son to play Bolt. It works fine with that game and also with Super Tux Cart. However to I downloaded and installed a free Super Mario Brothers (from here). The game works fine but not with the controller. How do I get it to recognize the controller? Please help!

Only games that are stated as supporting controllers can use it, which isnt all of them, unless you can find a utility to re-map the controller buttons to mimic key_presses and assign the game buttons to match the controller. Like XBCD would map the xbox controller on the PC

Ok tried joytokey and controllermk. Controllermk... well.. I have no idea what to do there. Joytokey seems a bit more striaghtforward, could set it up but nothing happens during the game...

All help appreciated.
