Converting old OE6 email to something .... anything

in an office, we have an old system running xp, that was the main office manager, secretary, jack-of-all trades, and she left the firm for brighter pastures. before leaving she called the ISP and asked them to nuke her email account. then deleted her account in OE6. I'm going to install a new windows 7 system for her replacement but there are important matters in the old stash of Outlook Express mail.
I spent almost 2 hours trying to get Thunderbird, Live Mail or various tools alleged to have conversion powers to work on the *.dbx files but none did. So I copied all of them and carted back to my shop.

can someone tell me how to deal with this mess? a way to convert to mbox, pst, eml, google mail, anything? csv? spreadsheet? text files??

If it was a company email account, try contacting the ISP and see if they might email files that can be recovered.

Maybe you can try making a new account in OE6, then rename the .dbx files and copy the files you have in your shop.

tried both of the first two suggestions. Grandecom reports the user phoned in a request to remove the account 7/6. all deleted. I grilled the tech support guy as to how sure he is re: deletion of messages, because I have dealt with them a number of times and came away convinced they had two different databases [likely sub-contracted to a mail provider]. no go.

Tried fabricating a brand new OE acct in a 'spare' User Acct. Nixed the default inbox.dbx and pasted in the 205MB extant Inbox.dbx. no fly.

every tool returns, generally, the same error: "no messages found". but the *.dbx's were run on last Friday, and they are sizable. Just to help my frustration level I opened the Inbox.dbx in 'Wordpad'... as you can imagine it got very wobbly but I was able to slowly scroll through the mostly-encrypted content and clearly read the subject lines [I think] of a bunch of messages. all correct as best I can tell.

something is defeating the tools. I tried Mail Viewer, DbxConv, Live/Windows Mail, T'bird. nada.
