Converting VOB to AVI

I just ripped by DVD, and because the files are VOB, I like to convert them to AVI. Sadly, I don't have anything that could do that, plus I don't want to download something that either a) doesn't do the trick, or b) is a bad download altogether.

Does anyone know any download out there I can do to convert VOB to AVI, please?

P.S. I did find this, any ideas/reviews/suggestions/etc?

For converting the main movie(one title set) to .avi I recommend AutoGK. I've used it on some "letterboxed" DVDs I bought. These letterboxed DVDs are not 16x9 but just 4:3 with black bars at the top and bottom. Usually AutoGK will auto crop and convert this type of DVD to a real 16x9 .avi.

The other thing I like about it is it gives good results in one pass. Just select the video quality percentage rather than file size. For a full DVD5 I usually set this to about 92% and the resulting one pass .avi file is around 2 GB.

It's not so great with subtitle handling. In that case I try to find some way to generate .srt subtitles from the DVD and just mux them in later with AviAddXSubs.

I've been using Ultra Video Converter for years, and it always works. The main conversion format I use is converting AVI's to VOB's so I'm sure it will work the other way around. It's pretty cheap too.

VOB and AVI are just packaging for usually different types of MPEG files. Just change the VOB file extension to AVI and that will work fine. Make a copy of your original first as insurance.

VOB and AVI are just packaging for usually different types of MPEG files. Just change the VOB file extension to AVI and that will work fine. Make a copy of your original first as insurance.

You could do that and Media Player will tell you that the file extension doesn't match the file format and then ask you whether you want to play the file.
Select Yes and also check 'Don't ask me again for this file type'

I will not recommend you this program. The conversion quality you will get would not be upto the mark. You should use H264 codecs in this regard . There are various GUIs that uses that codec.

AutoGk is a nice program that uses H264 codec. There are others like Gordian Knot, VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod,NanDub, But there is no doubt that the best of the lot is HandBrake . Many of us uses this program, and moreover, it supports Matroska conversion (in .mkv format, which is the latest and nowadays more popular than .avi).

Handbrake is the easiest one to use, and it compromises with the output quality as least as possible. Just have a try at least
