Copy files crash windows 7 x64 professional

I am in bad need of help.

I am simply trying to copy files from an external WD book to D: (partition on the same drive that holds C: )
Both volumes are NTFS.
Using a new Windows 7 install, windows updated, I drag and dropped from the external hard drive onto D:

Windows crashes. (monitor freeze and that is that)

I also tried using the command robocopy in the command line. Same results: indefinitely frozen system

I checked the drivers by letting windows go online and look for updates. Windows has returned saying the drivers are updated. Do I need to force update drivers?

What type/size of files are you copying? Are the drives defragmented?

You might want to try using a copy handler like TeraCopy. I suggest you download v2.27 as opposed to the latest v2.3. The latter crashed several times for me while trying to copy 30+GB data from my external WD My Book Essential to internal storage.

I appreciate the indication to use an external application and I was going to install it. But as soon as I started, it forced me to install yahoo toolbars and who knows what else.

Would there be other alternatives?

Where did you download TeraCopy from? I just downloaded and installed it from the link Kathy025 posted and there was no additional software install, just TeraCopy.

Also, try breaking up the copy into smaller chunks, may 20-30GB each.

But you are right, I should have gone the developer's website directly. I just downloaded the version they have there (v2.3) and I let's see if it solves the current problem.

It's pretty common for freeware to ask to install unwanted toolbars or some other bundleware. Software developers may need to do this to support their free projects.

Running the TeraCopy v2.27 setup again from the link provided though, I have not encountered such installations. Please do try again installing again and yes, copy in smaller chunks as well.

General Advice: Please ensure you READ through the installation prompts and AVOID doing "I-Agree-Next-Next-Next" on any installation that you do. This is a common pitfall. Manually uncheck any unwanted components and if you can, use the custom/advanced installation method to give you more control. Don't worry, most toolbars/bundleware can be safely opted out from during installation.

Nope, windows froze again... Neither TeraCopy v2.3 nor v2.27 succeeded. I checked the actual files; they are an iTunes library, mostly mp3 and mp4 and the sorts.

TeraCopy went all the way to about 38.55Gb and crashed.

Try determine if its a specific file where the freeze is occurring. Try copying in smaller parcels.

Rather than drag & drop your files, try copy & paste instead. If this succeeds then just delete the already copies files from your original source.

Are you still drag-and-dropping?

1) Go with the more traditional copy-paste (as suggested).
2) Try copying in smaller chunks. Have you tried this?
3) Click the the "More" button in TeraCopy, it should display the status of files being transferred. See if it hangs on a particular file.
