Copy from CD to internal hard drive slow: one hour per 1MB file

I want to copy many JPGs, average size 1.5MB, from CD to a C: directory. Using Windows Explorer, the popup window tells me 5 hours and 30 minutes for (5 files) 5.25MB. When I tried to copy 114 files, it said more than one day. What might be going on?

Is that actually how long its taking or just what Windows tells you? I've copied files that Windows would tell me takes "x" time but in reality it was much less.

Wallclock time very close to what the message indicated. One idea I had was that the poor condition of the surface of the CD might be a part of the problem. I have the idea that it was the functionality of Windows Explorer dealing with -- I am just guessing -- reading and rereading the same spot. What I did after I gave up on Win Exp was use Adobe PSE 11 to open the JPGs, 6 at a time, crop off the fringe outside of 4x6 aspect ratio, and "close all." My impression is that this went significantly faster than Win Exp doing the same thing. I have not yet done a precise timing, but that is what I believe: that Win Exp, when trying to do even small batches of JPGs on a poor surface has a hard time.

Can you copy what is on the CD to a new CD? Try this and see what happens.

I had the same idea, so I tried it already. It did copy all the JPGs, in far less time that Win Exp was taking. (I had to abort the Win Exp copy, due to the times that I wrote about.) However, the JPG files resulting on the new CD cannot be opened by Adobe PSE 9 or PSE 11, nor Corel PaintShop Pro. Win Exp can list these files, but does not show thumbnails. All seems to hinge on the poor surface of the original CD.
