copy problem

if I copy something (Ctrl+c or highlight and right click copy) from a webpage to share with someone. or if I copy an email address. then I open outlook and open a mail message. If I hit paste, nothing happens.

if I open outlook, open a new message THEN copy/paste it works fine.

i'm sure there is some goofy setting somewhere but I cannot seem to get it to work.

so I end up copying something then opening outlook then hitting paste ...grumbling... then repeating with email open and it works. appears to be FF, Chrome and IE

ideas?

Exactly where are you trying to paste? Are you making sure that whichever text field you want to paste into currently has the focus (i.e. shows a blinking cursor)?
Usually you just leftclick once into the text field and then paste...shouldn't be any problem.

Ctrl + V

Some times to be successful at a paste I have to use Ctrl +V. I don't know why.

Re-reading your first post again, I noticed you said you first tried pasting into an existing email, and only then into a new, empty one (i.e. when you go to compose a new message to someone).

Am I getting that right? If so, it's pretty simple - you can't paste into an existing message - you'd have to hit the Reply button first.

No sorry.
I copy txt or an email address from a browser
Then open outlook.
Click new message
Click on body of email or the address line
Right Click and paste is not an option. Ctrl v yields nothing.

Go back to browser then repeat (with new email already open) all works fine

Hmm, that's unusual.

You're not closing the browser after copying text from it (before you try to paste it in your email client), right?
I find that at least with some programs, doing so automatically clears the clipboard buffer so nothing is left to paste.

That is correct and has happened since day 1 of win 7. Just finally got around to being annoyed enough to ask about it

Understandable - but I really don't know what the issue could be, unless it's simply a bug in Outlook. Does the "paste-and-nothing-happens" bug occur with anything else besides Outlook too?

I should actually ask...since Windows 7 comes with "Windows Mail", not Outlook (same thing really but different name), are you talking about the Outlook included with MS Office?

This is outlook 2003 part of MS Office 2003

but I just experimented with it a little further. i copied a URL from FF (select Right Click copy) then I opened IE and right clicked, no paste option. now that IE is already open if I repeat the process it works fine. so not unique to Outlook as I had once thought.

My best guess is that something is clearing your clipboard whenever you open a new program. That shouldn't happen of course, and I don't know what could be responsible for it. Some overly aggressive security setting of some kind?

I wish I had a better idea. :(

There are several different ways to Copy and Paste, and occasionally, for whatever reason, one of them just doesn't work in certain instances. I find, for example, that it does NOT always work when I just highlight the text, click on Copy and then try to Paste --- I get nothing. BUT if I highlight the text, then right-click and select Copy, for whatever reason, when I go to Paste that text, it works.
