Copying from Win 7 to external drive - "some file paths too long"

I have been backing up all files from a Win 7 machine to an external drive. When I did, I received an error msg: something about the path length to the some files is too long and these specific files couldn't be copied. I installed PATH LENGTH CHECKER and it shows that none of the files paths are longer than 213 characters. But I read somewhere that the limit is 260, not 213. Why is this happening?

The question isn't where it is now but the destination and that is for the entire path including folders and the name. If you have a lot of nested folders maybe try moving some of them up.
