Core temperature or CPU temperature?

Hi,

I have an AMD 955 CPU and ROG Crosshair III formula motherboard

When testing, I use both HWM Pro, AMD Overdrive and LCD Poster to watch out for the temps.

In both HWM Pro and LCD poster there is the CPU temperature showing.

I use AMD overdrive to look for Core temps...

The max temp is 62C...

Is that the max CPU temp or max CPU core temp???

While testing, Highest CPU temp was 53C (@3.8GHz, IntelBurn) and Core temp was 59C....

So which one shall I look out for?

Just because, my bank is empty and cant afford another PC/CPU -.-"

I read somewhere core temp and cpu temps are real different and core temps can go upto 70C or something, thats why I am asking this question.

your ''core temps'' will go above (official thermal specification), the chips cut off point is governed by the (Tcase / CPU temp).

so core temps on average are give or take 10c hotter than the overall CPU temp, if the overall temps start to pass 70c then you need to start looking at cooling & case configuration...

you can try coretemp or HWmonitor to monitor the core temps

The max temp quoted by AMD is 62C, and that is the CPU temp, or Tcase max. The core temp will be slightly higher than that. Usually 7 to 8 degrees.

It's the CPU temp that you need to worry about. The chips have a thermal throttle, but a sustained temp above 62C will eventually damage or kill it.

Are you using these all at the same time?

The SMBuss is not intended for multiple concurrent access and it's very likely these softwares are interfering with each other... meaning you are not getting accurate readings.

In my experience CPUZ's Hardware Monitor is the most accurate.
