Hello - Please help:

1. Windows 7 Pro
2. 3 HDDs - 2 operating systems (XP & Windows 7)
3. Using Easy BCD

I removed the HDD with Windows XP and replaced it with another drive from a second computer, which also had Windows XP installed.

When I booted up the computer, Windows 7 upgraded the replacement drive to Windows 7 with warnings about counterfeit software.

I tried to correct the problem by installing Easy BCD on the replacement drive and repairing the boot sector on both drives using Easy BCD.

I could not get the computer to boot into windows on either drive after that, so I removed the replacement drive from the computer.

At the present time,
1. I cannot boot into Windows 7. Error Message: NTLDR is Missing.
2. Drive C is assigned to 3d HDD which has only data on it.
3. Windows 7 installed on Drive D.

I tried to use the "Repair My Computer" feature of Windows 7 by inserting the Windows 7 disk, but no operating system appeared in the seletion window, and i was prompted to "install drivers" to continue. At this point I decided to post to this forum.

Thank you for your help.

Sheila

What makes you think that Win7 upgraded a second XP HD you inserted? This is not possible unless you did this yourself.

The correct procedure is to unplug all other HD's and peripherals, reboot and tap the key to enter BIOS setup, set Win7 HD first to boot (after DVD drive), save changes and exit.

Then Mark Partition Active either the 100mb System Reserved boot partition if you have it onboard the Win7 HD, or the Win7 partition itself.

Then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times until it writes the System Boot files to Win7 or it's boot partition and starts up Win7.

Afterwards if you want to boot XP at boot tap the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key which on Asus is F8, select XP HD to boot.

If XP will not boot due to hardware differences, install Paragon Virtualization Manager to Win7 to run adapt XP to the new hardware, pointing it to the XP SATA controller drivers for the new hardware if prompted.

Corrupt Boot Sector Windows 7 Pro

Hello Greg

Thank you very much for your help.

I thought that Windows upgraded XP to 7 because the Windows 7 logo and musical theme came up, rather than the XP logo and theme.

God bless you.

When you change physical drives in a PC, one thing that can happen is that the default boot order of the drives can change on you. So, you reboot, expecting it to boot from the XP drive, when in fact, it defaults to the Win7 drive and boots from that.

If the XP drive is bootable on its own, I would disconnect the Win7 drive and try booting from it. That should confirm that it was not automatically upgraded to Win7.

Also, if you had the original XP drive connected to your PC when you installed Win7, it would have written the boot loader files to the XP drive, not to the Win7 drive. Thus, when you replaced the drive, unless that XP drive had been in a similar situation, when you booted from it, you should have booted directly into XP.
