Corrupt ISO's

Knowing what it is to have to re-download all those large files again, I'm trying to have you avoid that, if possible. I've had to do the same on occasion, and more than a year later, I still haven't been able to get some of my stuff back that I lost in a similar fashion.

So I hope this works for you, Brayway, because I'm fresh out of ideas of how to solve this issue for you.

For the RCs and Linux iso images those will go a lot faster then relocating the other ones you stocked up on. I still suspect you are having a Windows problem since this is happening to all not just one or two of them. Have you tried copying one of more of them onto the main drive and then burning them to disk from there?

yea i have tried those images i posted earlier of me trying to burn them where from my desktop. and i went through them earlier and out of the 19 iso images i tested 9 where corrupted and those 9 are the ones that i dont want corrupted lolz

That's a hard break! I wemt through enough of that when going to reuse files burned to disk for backup and later found(on a new build, new drives even) files were toast! Toss a few cd-rs with some old goodies away!

Those were the oldies for like the 9x family to try out on DOSBox or simply to see if the 32bit 7 with the compatibility mode set would see them go on. Plus drivers for older cards backed up in case another old case needed to be refurbed! LOST!

At least the RCs are available until mid August and Linux distros usually see a collection of the latest releases last awhile while some things....

hmm...well i still got 7RC ISO that is one of those that didn't die, linux idont really care for if i lost it or not cause they aer un-metered downloads form my isp. some of the things that have died are isos of games that i have lost the disc for and customized winodws ISO's which i dont really want to remake.......

And those are the "unreplacables" where the all too often heard "frequent backups" is the phrase you never want to forget! I've been there a few times! even with cds you could no longer read?!

Fortunately I simply decided to buy a second and third drive as well as a few data dvds burned for safe keeping some unreplacables. The two 1tb drives set aside for storage won't see any OS there until the pair of 2tb drives are in probably the next build.

The storage drives still hold images I made with the 7 backup tool and the Macrium Reflect backup program. I guess "spreading the wealth" of files between multiple drives and removable media can spare you from the worst!

The thing to remember about the setup here however is that knowing the testing and 7 RCs were temp from the start I had to make up a disaster recovery plan. Did I need the second 1tb drive? No! But...??? You never know like you found out there unfortunately too late. It stinks!

forced re-check on a torrent client might help if you can find a matching torrent,just a thought
but if i were you I'll be more worried about why they got corrupted in the first place....

Alright so i tried copying to teh desktop then tried opening with power ISO and Winrar and these are the errors i get.

One thing you might want to try is to install another app besides poweriso to see if the iso's are corrupt. I have had power iso go corrupt on me and it gave similar errors.

FWIW, I agree with Nighthawk that it may be a combination of windows issues and HD errors causing the problems in the first place. This has been happening to me too for the last 3 months or so. (especially since dual booting win7 x64/xp pro x32)

I d/l an iso, run the hash checks and everything checks out A-OK.

Copying to another physical HD corrupts the image. Multiple copy attempts eventualy succeed.


Thoughts;

• Known good ISO's are found to be corrupt a few weeks later.
• Hashtab cobbles my windows7 install.
• Win7 seems more sensitive about HD's.

I don't think it is anything to do with Hashtab - works fine for me.

Possibly to do with the.iso being on an external drive.

Are there issues with any other file types on that drive?

I've used both win7 and terracopy with the same results.

My Win7 build just seems to have "issues". Still not sure if it's ram or physical drives but, it' totally usable as my main daily use pc. (like, checking SevenForums everyday, browsing newsgroups, etc.)

I'm not too concerned about it tho. I'll prolly update this box in the next few months. (well, gonna consolidate pc's and add a mini ITX as a file server, reducing the server'ish function of my main pc.) I'll be READY come October!

That's a mystery alright since the RCs are still intact here since first downloaded back in May and can still be opened right up with a double click with Winrar. I've had iso images for ubuntu 7.10 and 8.10 as well as older GParted live images stored here since last year and can still be used at any time.

If you can open with WINRAR then they are OK. You also can test with Winrar. and before I would say they are CORRUPT.. uncompress with winrar with EXACT to same name.iso
then it is usable without winrar.
VERY FEW FILES ARE USABLE WHILE COMPRESSED.

I couldn't agree more on that! Too often one or two particular programs will end up with a list of problems while the next you try seems to work out.

That's an oldie but goodie!

I meant to ask brayway if the drive still saw the original Factory Fat32 partition or was reformatted to NTFS? before moving the present 500gb host drive out of the external casing I first nuked the factory stuff off completely before placing any files on it.

For the second 1tb model I simply tossed that one right in to do the same. Both are doing the job! I would suggest backing the files up from the drive there as well as trying out a new program. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

If you have a good 4gb usb flash drive download UltraISO and try creating a usb key out of the RC and Linux isos to see how those go. You can easily boot from the flash drive to see if everything loads up like it should.
