Corrupt new user accounts

Greetings all,

First post here. I'm having problems with creating new user accounts, admin or otherwise. Login works fine, but icons are all generic and windows explorer turns up the "page failed to load" error. In contrast, my regular admin acct works perfectly. I noticed this after a hard shutdown but am unsure there is a connection. I performed a system restore from an earlier restore point from before the unsafe shutdown but no luck. Any ideas?

I found several references for corrupt new accounts, most received errors during the creation process, and were unable to create the account. Others seem to address accounts that did at one time work fine, and pointed back to the same MSKB for corrupt user profiles. None seem to fit your problem of the new accounts getting created but are unusable. So I don't know the answer to your problems so I'm just going to ask more questions to maybe jog something in someone's head.

What's this history of this computer?
Has it been working fine?
Are there other accounts and do they work?
Can you do everything you want to do with your regular Admin account?
Is this the system listed in your system specs?
Is your system current and secure? With what?
Have you scanned for malware?
I also found a suggestion to take down the security while creating the new account. I've never had to take down my security, and don't recommend it if not necessary. However, in that event, I recommend as a security precaution you disconnect your network from the Internet. Either pull the cable between router and modem, or pull the modem's ISP connection. Then Windows will still be able to setup your network access without exposing your computer to badguys on the Internet. Once account is set (and hopefully working properly) reconnect your Internet access.

History

Dear team,

Thanks for the reply. The computers history is a short one, and yes, it is the model listed in the system specs. it recently underwent a mobo replacement following a bad bios flash, although I suspect this is unrelated to the issue at hand. Computer worked flawlessly prior to, and following the mobo replacement, just before this issue arose. I'm beginning to think that the hard shutdown may really be the culprit here. I have done a full system scan with both malwarebytes and mse, both of which turned up no leads. I have no other accounts besides the generic guest acct, which is off. It was just upon trying to create an additional acct that I noticed this problem. In my last post I mentioned that my regular admin acct was working perfectly, but I think I may have been premature in that analysis. Since, I have been getting c++ runtime errors associated with firefox and the divx web player. Internet explorer is also acting up (no specific error codes but making strange noises?!?) I have read about Uac settings possibly interfering with the creation of new user accts, so I'll try creating one under reduced settings and post my results. Also, just a little extra information...I have run chkdsk on both partitions (c,d) and the results turned up no bad sectors. Also I ran the windows memory diag, which again yielded nothing of consequence. Is system restore my best option?

You said you already tried System Restore.

Was this an identical motherboard to the old? Did you do a fresh Windows install? Or just swap motherboards?

System restore

Ur right, sorry. I did a system restore from a restore point created by the system (daily restore point following critical updates), but I was thinking maybe a more thorough method might be necessary. Also, I didn't do a fresh system install following the motherboard replacement cuz I hadn't backed up my data properly before the bad bios flash. I know...shame on me:rolleyes: Also, I believe the mobo is the same....bios version is different tho.

If the motherboard is not exactly the same, it is likely it has different integrated hardware, meaning it needs different drivers installed. Often, a fresh Windows repair, or fresh install is best when replacing boards.

Restore

Ok. So does that mean I need an install disc? When the computer was new, I created a system backup using the manufacturers utility that would do a complete restore. Also I've created a system image using the windows utility. Which one do u recommend? I believe the drivers that would be installed with the manufacturers restore discs would be for the old motherboard no?

To be truthful, I don't know the best solution and I don't see where the wrong drivers would affect creating new users. Any errors in Device Manager?

Update

Hi dig,

Just thought I'd give u an update. I read ur last suggested post, but the thread mentioned a windows seven install disc, which I don't have since this is a new computer and windows came stock on it. What I decided to try then, was a restore from a previous image I created (after Motherboard replacement, but before hard shut down). Well that did absolutely no good, so I assume it's safe to say that the motherboard replacement is causing the issue (which I guess u were leaning towards already) :p I then proceeded to perform a complete restore using the recovery partition. It went seemingly well at first, but I soon realized that I was unable to restore my files using the backup I had made. Furthermore, Internet explorer was yielding strange problems (I was unable to exit fullscreen mode when viewing media). On a side note, u may be interested to know that both the restore using the windows image utility, and the one using the recovery partition, only affected my first hd partition with windows on it. My second hd partition was untouched. I just found that interesting because I read a few forums where ppl were quite unsure of the effects of a system restore on additional partitions. Anyway, still sol as far as solving this thing. Any chance I could just download appropriate drivers for my new mobo manually (assuming now this is a driver issue)?

Thx,

-milfarm

Sure - from the motherboard or PC maker's website.

Note if that is a new computer, you should be able to contact the PC maker and order a real disk.

Throwing in the towel

To anyone who cares,

The corrupt user accts that were being created were the result of UAC restrictions. Disable UAC, create the acct, and everything should work fine. In my case however, there was just too much other bulljizz going on for that minor triumph to mean shit. Moral of the story=DON'T FLASH YOUR BIOS.

Thx for all the help dig,

Update

Hi again,

It's been over a week now since performing a complete system restore and things appear to be running smoothly. Restored from the system partition one final time, ditched the backup, and manually reinstalled everything. All drivers appeared to update fine thru device manager, except the one for my Nvidia optimus gc which I then downloaded from the Nvidia website. I think letting windows update do it's thing was crucial to system function immediately following the restore (something I ignored when I restored the first time). Also, I had one more issue with a stubborn program causing an error. The Asus splendid utility was causing the chamelion engine out of service error on startup. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling as per official Asus support guidelines, but no luck. Eventually went on a clicking spree inside the folder housing the utility (opening all the .exe's, as I'd read that the ACMON svc was dependent on several other executables). Well the error's gone now so maybe that did the trick..? Anyway, back up and running just as good as ever. Funnily enough, my windows experience score is substantially better than with the previous mobo (dunno what significance that carries but I'll take it :p)
