Solved Could somebody help me with an error i made using group policy

Appreciate some help as I have made a mistake using the Local group Policy editor and locked myself out.

I was trying to restrict certain programs using the Local Group Policy editor following the instructions shown here

however, now the administrator account is getting the "operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. Contact syste administration" message for all programs and control panel functions.


I am logged in as administrator but get the message.


What should I do? any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Scooterboy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think you may have linked the wrong item. That one does not seem to be related to your issue. If you could post back with the link of the instructions you used, we may be able to help reverse it.

However, you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you did this to undo it as well.

As a result i had to do a restore from a disk image. was not to bad as i only made the image a day before. but i would like to know what i did wrong to lock the administrator out from running any windows program.

Ok. If you are able to, downloading and merging the REG file below, then restarting the computer will remove the restrictions set by that specific group policy setting.

If you are not able to merge the REG file, then see if you may be able to enable the built-in Administrator, log in to it, and merge the REG file below.

Thanks for that. As a result using the disk image i managed to restore it back and got the privileges as they should be. thanks for your help.

I then i did some more reading and it aappears that the programs that you add to the group policy list are those that can be run by other users. I still don't get then why it is designed that the administrator can lock his permissions out.

any body got any good links on where to read up. My aim is to make certain programs unavailable to the rest of the family when they log in on their own accounts.
