as with a bunch of the other people on here, I too have a similar issue with cs. now im not certain its a windows 7 issue but anyway I used to have near-constant 100 fps (and i even had high poly models and skins and what-not). back then i had 2 geforce 9600's and 2 GB of ram.

now i have 1 gtx 285, 8 GB RAM, and a quad core processer, which is MORE than sufficient to run crappy ol' cs 1.6. now i realize cs is OLD but why would a better gfx card and more ram cause it to perform worse??

fps goes from 100 to as low as 10 when theres moderate - high "action" on the screen. i was even in a map like fy_iceworld BY MYSELF and the guns on the ground alone made my fps go to 25...

what the heck D: whyyyyy ><

did not read every post but, -dxlevel80. This will set it for dx8 mode. you could do dx7, but many many servers boot people for having a mat dx level under 80. I play no issue, and your hardware shouldn't be the issue.

@ Borum
At the moment I had 60 fps max, my vsync was turned off...
To solve this, I just turned vsync on, hit apply and off and hit again apply. After this my fps wasn't capped anymore...

thanks dude this worked for me aswell :D

Hey!
Had the same problem as many of you with constant FPS dropp.

This is how I fixed it:
Did the Vsync on,off,on,off thing
Launched CS 1.6 and entered random server, tabbed out and ctrl + alt + del and set the Affinity to 1 core (nr 3 was on lowest usage for me)
and turned the priority for HL.exe to high

Works great with 100fps all the time and all lagg's gone!

Great thread!

Hi guys,

It would SEEM that the latest updates from Windows 7 may have fixed the fps drop in cs 1.6, specifically KB982110 and KB2272691. Not sure which one of them did the trick but, after i installed, i tried playing a few rounds and it went smoothly as it would in XP. Adding an extra priority for hl.exe in the task manager will also increase performance.

I tried virtually all the fixes i found while googling, but none seemed to fix my issue. It improved somewhat, but not a permanent fix. Out of all the ideas suggested, i stuck to network throttling off, turned off DEP for hl.exe.

I have a core 2 duo 2Ghz a piece, 2 GB DDR3, and a GeForce 9500 GT, running Win 7 x86.

Hope this helps.

Edit2: Something helped me to keep almost permanent 100FPS (no lags when meeting enemies or when HE grenades explode). I did following things at once and don´t know exactly what helped:

- force V-sync on/off/on/off
- disable/enable network adapter
- disable/enable sound card
- start steam in compatibility mode for Win XP SP 3

I just did these few things already mentioned in this forum and it works.

BTW I already have the mentioned updates for Win 7 which could solve the compatilbility issues in some applications.

Thanks pinstripe,

This seems to have permanently fixed the problem for me. For those of you who haven't tried this yet, this is what I did:

Leave the multimedia class scheduler service running, but disable its network throttling "feature":

  • Open regedit
  • Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
  • There will be an entry for network performance throttling, default value is 10; set it to FFFFFFFF hex (willl look like 0xFFFFFFFF to the right of the entry)
  • Reboot

Definitely works for me ! Thank you!
