So, CS:S has been crashing on my lately as the title says. I can't pinpoint why. Basically what happens is at some point during the game (whether on startup, title screen, or in game) the game will crash and my monitor will shutoff or go into power save mode. I'm not sure it's a Windows 7 issue because it has been working fine since I've had 7. Only until recently has this started happening. Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

Have you updated any of your drivers lately? It sounds like a Directx or graphics driver issue.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise (aka Ultimate) and I can confirm CS:S works 100% fine. In fact, Valve has 64-bit executables out for each of or most of their most prominent games (ie HL2, CS:S, etc). mckillwashere might be onto something, so definitely make sure your drivers are intact.

Also, scan with Malwarebytes

There is not a x64 version of CS:S the x64 versions are for games that were released after half life 2 episode 1 if i am not mistaken. To tell weather or not you are running an x64 bit version when it launched it will state someplace on the main screen 64-bit version.

There is definitely a 64-bit version of Half-Life 2, Google it.

And I think this might be a Steam Engine error, not a Windows error. They're not uncommon.

Do you get any dialog boxes after it crashes, "Steam Engine Error"? Go into the games list in Steam and right click on Counter-Strike: Source. Go into Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

No problem. It shouldn't be fragmented at all since Steam has it's own built-in defragmenter for its games. Glad it worked :)

Nevermind...it's back to crashing. I think with all the trouble I've been having lately, the graphics card must be going bad. Any ideas on how to check?

Well, I pulled my desktop out and blew out all the dust and checked the graphics card. Had quite a bit of dust inside the fan, so I blew that out too and put it back in to see if anything changed. Only time will tell if something is truly wrong with the graphics card.

Well, turns out my graphics card is bad. The fan has stopped working and I'll have to get a new or fixed card in order to get anywhere. Thanks for all the help though guys.
