Don't think I haven't read all the threads about this problem, I have. But none of the countless solutions seem to work for me. I used to be able to run CSS on XP very smoothly, but now I can't run it on either OS without it lagging. If anyone knows a solution please post.

Thanks in advance

what have you tried so far?
CSS is one of the few games that I log tons of hours with (795 hours logged since they started counting) and haven't encountered any lagging issues in Win7.

I've tried setting that value to FFFFFFFF or something, tried disabling Aero, Gamebooster, PC booster, running in compatibility, every CSS lag thread on these and other forums. I'm going to consider uninstalling 7 if I don't find another way, and that would be a waste of money.

Hi iJohn,

We could do with you filling out your full system specs to further help you out.

Also i take you've been through the official Steam CSS forums because i see a lot of threads on this sort of problem on there. It seems that a lot of people forget that when they update to a newer OS and the fact that the Source Engine as been updated there is a good chance that their older hardware isn't the best at handling all the extra processing power that is needed.

As always the best advice at first is to make sure you are fully up to date on all your driver's and such for your specific hardware (Chipset/motherboard driver's are one of the most important that a alot of people seem to overlook). Also please be specific with which Nvidia driver's you are currently using because i have also seen a lot of complaints about the latest driver's from them causing problems on older cards due to them being slightly better optimised for the newer breed of graphics cards. I personally found the 197.45 driver's to be the best for my older 8800GTS card when i was using it. The newer driver's just gave me problems.

Hope that helps. I've found a way to fix the lag a tiny bit, but not completely. YouTube - Reduce lag in any source game // css, tf2, portal, hl2, dod:s, hl2;dm

But if anyone knows how to COMPLETELY fix, please post here.

Thanks in adavance.

Add some memory. Run resource monitor ingame and see your memory/cpu usage. 2GB of ram with Win 7 and CSS would be pushing it IMO. Go to 4GB. Plus you may be seeing some bottleneck from your video card being it's an 8600. CPU itself seems fine. Also not sure what graphics settings you run but you may want to reduce your resolution/textures if you can. Download FRAPS if you don't use it and let us know what your framerates are. It has a benchmarking tool that will plot your min/avg/max. If you are dipping below 30 then the above recommendations would help. If not then you may want to start looking at your network/game server selection.

Well from what i can see from your system specs and WDAexodus already pointed it out is the low amount of system ram you have there. Personally i wouldn't try running Win7 on anything less than 3Gb of ram, even more so if you are a bit of a gamer.

Anyway you CPU is just about ok and everything else should be fine for running CSS (If a little on the lower side of system requirments these day's). If as well you do what WDAexodus said about dropping your resolution ingame to see if you get more performance only to find you gain none then that will be your CPU bottlenecking as the Source engine as always been CPU dependant. But it is always really best to run at your monitor's native resolution to be honest.

You shouldn't really have to drop your DirectX level down to 8 as well. Afterall i can still run CSS perfectly well on my Girlfriends system with a Pentium 4 in it and other older parts.

So again i point to driver's and such. You really need to make sure you are fully up to date with them all.

Good luck with it and if i can think of anything else or i come across anything i'll be sure to let you know.

EDIT: One thing i did just think of and seeing as you are on windows 7. Did you make sure to download the latest version of DirectX? It is well known that Windows 7 doesn't come with all the DirectX 9 components. Even though it say's your system is DirectX 11 supported that is just the OS. None of your hardware actually supports DirextX 11, just 9.

Thanks for posting,

I use max_netgraph 3 to see my FPS, it was 200, but when lagging went to low 20s, then 50s before coming up to 200s again. As for adding more Ram, how much would that cost on average? and would uninstalling 7 and only using XP help the situation? And btw I am on lastest DirectX, drivers and all that.

Thanks in advance.

1st thing : if u get low fps or bad fps in a game like CS or CSS.. u shud kill urself for having such a old system.

2nd : Else you mite b having bottleneck.. which means ur GPU ram is ****ed up or DDR RAM s getting high temperature.

3rd : Mite be ur Processor who cant take so much load.. e.g. CPU lesser than C2D 2.2

Comments like that aren't really needed. They neither help the person needing the help or make you look that good. Also looking at your specs you've not much room to talk

And iJohn. Most server block you from using any other Netgraph other than netgraph_1 (For some reason) I think it's the Zblock admin addon and i used to get kicked by the server when trying to use netgraph_3.

Anyway have you tried some of the high_fps config's that are knocking around on the CSS forums? Also might be an idea to check withing your Steam setting for CSS that you are setup correctly for your internet speed and region. Then also make sure your rates are correct. But after all that said it does sound like something in your system is struggling with Win7 and gaming.

Unfortunately Windows 7 takes up more memory than XP does. I experienced the same thing with my old system. I couldn't run games well in W7 but could in XP. Mainly because of memory and my CPU. You really need to update you memory and possilby your video card. I think your processor is fine for CSS but not for many current games when ran under W7. I imagine you are running DDR 2 800. 4GB will put you back anywhere from $50 to $100 depending on what you get. If you can find another 2GB to match what you have you're looking around $40. A new budget card can be around $100.

Actually I've found that the Steam overlay tab seems to make me lag, so if I don't open it (which is hard for me) I won't lag.

Anyone know a way to disable it so im not tempted?

You can go into task manager and end task on steamoverlay.ui (I believe that's the process). You can go into steam and make it some funky key combo that you won't remember so it won't pop up.

Is multicore rendering enabled or disabled in CSS? If enabled, disable it and see if it helps.

if that does not help, then disable your sound in bios (if you are using onboard sound) and see if the game runs better with no sound.
