Hi all,

A recent Windows update has revealed that my Windows 7 Ultimate is not genuine. Each time I power up Microsoft are on my case about getting genuine software, so I need to do the right thing and spend a bit of money.

I have a couple of questions, the first one is can I upgrade rather than getting the complete install. Guess I already know the answer to that one!

What is the difference between Ultimate and Ultimate N?

What does it mean when it says Windows 7 Ultimate - 1 PC?

You can upgrade of you had a supporting OS prior to installing the non genuine.

Windows N Editions are available for both upgrades and new purchases, for the Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7. The features in the N Editions are the same as their equivalent full versions as well as the same price, but do not include Windows Media Player. The cost of the N Editions are the same as the full versions, as Windows Media Player can be downloaded without charge from Microsoft for the N Editions. This comes after an EU lawsuit in which Microsoft was sued for anti-competitive practices. Before Internet Explorer is launched, a browser choice dialogue is brought up to ask the user which browser they want, however Internet Explorer is still installed.Source Winkipedia

1 pc probably means that it is an OEM and that it is tied to one computer for life. You can never use it on another computer

Fresh install. Don't forget to back up all your data first.

What is the difference between Ultimate and Ultimate N?

-N does not have windows media player, but can be downloaded free of charge from microsoft. (this came about due to the lawsuit for anti-competitive practices)

The os can only be put on one pc, period.
Businesses use the Enterprise verion with Volume Licensing, as the have plenty of pc's.

Before you buy anything...how did you get your current version? If you purchased it somewhere, thinking it was legit, and can prove that...Microsoft may give you a license for free.

Well they would sue the company you bought it from and part of the settlement would be to replace your windows ...

No...you provide proof, like an invoice, and Microsoft gives you a key.

If they feel like spending the money, sure. I'm not aware of that ever happening. I do know a few people who bought Windows 7 on Ebay when it was released, against my advice, and ended up with counterfiet copies. Once they provided proof, such as Ebay links and PayPal receipts, they were given a new, valid key on the spot.

It may be also worth looking at the differences between versions before you purchase.
Ultimate VS. Home Premium for example.

The large majority of users will find Home Premium offers everything they need, and will also save you some money.

This of course isn't the case for everyone, as some will need those extra features. But you may find that the extras Ultimate offers are things you have no need for.

Only you can decide that for yourself.
