Cpu at 50 degrees when virtually idle

The Intel CPU Diagnostic Utility wont install because I have a more recent C++ libary on my computer and it cant downgrade.

I think it may need a Visual C++ redistributable 2005. You can have multiple redistributables installed as far as I'm aware - I do. I also don't recall needing to do anything special.

That is correct Michael, I have seaveral Visual C++ redistributables on my PC. Apparently software requires different ones.

The idea is to eliminate any module errors and test whether or not running 16GB of ram in a overclock profile (which XMP is) is causing your problems.

Exactly. As I mentioned in your other thread, 16GB can complicate things. The fact that it appears to be two kits of 1600mhz and not 1333mhz adds to the issue.


The data in the Rams X.M.P profiles contain not only the DRAM timings, but can also adjust the CPU multiplier etc to compensate. Disabling X.M.P doesn't always revert all it's changes.

The flow on affect is if you have left all voltage settings on auto (like the CPU voltage/vcore) then it's feasible that the X.M.P profile has also increased that as well, hence the higher temps. What does CPU-Z show your vcore @ idle and load?


Also, what does your DRAM voltage now show as? (idle vcore and DRAM can be found in the M.I.T section of the BIOS I believe. 'One kit' may be able to run 1333mhz @ 1.5v~. For 1600mhz, it may require 1.6v~. For both kits @ 1600mhz it might be 1.65v~ etc. More volts, more heat.)

The temperature increase sounds like it stems from increased voltages somewhere to compensate.

I have disabled XMP profile, things basically went back to normal temperature wise, however what you say about left over settings may be true, I am not sure what the case was before installing the new RAM, but my 2600k now seems to be clocked at 3.5ghz when in use. Perhaps due to this I am reaching the 80 degrees mark at around 70% load. I will check my bios when I get back in a few hours.

EDIT: I quickly checked my CPU monitors and it appears as though the multiplier has been changed to 35x permanently, except in idle or during turbo (as opposed to turbo mode doing so temporarily).

EDIT 2: Ok, so I had some time. A few things I noticed, my CPUs Turbo ratio seems to be 35, while its non-turbo ratio is 34. This just seems odd to me seeing as the cpu runs at 3.5 instead, and turbos to 3.8 (I assume by ratio it means multiplier?). However the BIOS still reports a multiplier of 34, with a cpu vcore of 1.26V. My images of the MIT home page (I just took pictures, they arent very good though) are cut off, but I assume the bottom 2 are to do with ram. The [something]core is 1.224V, the DRAM voltage is 1.548V, this is without XMP.

GOT IT! XMP profile ups the VTT voltage from 1.05V to 1.2V
