CPU being flooded with useless programs

It's hard for me to explain my problem, but I'll try. Essentially, about a week or so ago I noticed that my computer randomly began lagging. I checked Task Manager and sure enough my CPU Usage was at about 90%, just from being on Google Chrome. Dumbfounded, I looked at the screen, and the Usage began rising and falling rapidly, going anywhere from 60% to 99% in a few seconds. I looked at the processes and saw a few things jumping around from 00-14% usage. Things like: Microsoft Connection Manager Monitor, COM Surrogate, Microsoft DirectPlay8 Server, Microsoft DirectPlay Helper, Host Process for Windows Services, and more. All things along these lines. So next I casually went through and end each process of the "bouncers" and my computer went back to normal performance. Eventually though it went back up and the same process was repeated. In addition to this, if I open my Volume Mixer, a lot of these applications (or whatever they are) are open and periodically more are opened, and some are closed. This is my situation, I have no idea what to do, please help me!

Take a look at this thread. There appears to be a new virus that the AV and other malware companies haven't caught onto yet and can be a bugger to get rid of. Google Chrome seems to be the common denominator.

Another troublesome virus is Trovi. It appears sneak in with Google Chrome and hijacks the browser, replacing it with its own. It also is a bear to get rid of.

You have Mcafee installed ?
Use Clean boot,

Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,

Thanks for your initial help, I just had a few quick questions based on what you said.

I read what you wrote and managed to get the msconfig program up but I am confused on where you want me to go from here. Did you suggest for me to clean boot? And also do you want screenshots of the services posted here as a reply to you?

Mcafee is the biggest Red Flag I see
It's one of the worst security suite ever developed please consider properly removing it and load another like MSE Microsoft security essentials to test with or Panda

Disable ALL startups and reboot, then see what happens.

I did both the Safe Boot and the Startup restarts, issue seems to be resolved for the moment, but will reply in about 30 minutes to see if anything has changed.

Shouldn't I try to find the program that was causing the virus and remove it? Or is that asking for too much?

Turn off all those updater services too

All those services you see running are killing the cpu

Yes do remove McAfee totally. Then install MSE for now.
