(Not sure where to put this)

The CPU fan keeps revving up every few minutes for a couple of seconds and then down again. I only have light applications like microsoft word and firefox open....

This seems to be much noiser than my old lenovo laptop, which has a 2nd gen i7 quad core (this one has a 3rd gen i7 quad core).

Core temps are about 40-45 degrees celsius on average although some cores sometimes spikes to 50 degrees.

Can anyone tell me if anything can be done about the noise? Laptop is brand new, so dust should not be a problem.

First things first, when was the last time you opened it up and cleaned or blew it out with compressed air. Do you leave this on for long periods and or have dust and or pets in the house? It sounds from the spec's that it's not that old but it's always a good place to start.

Well than never mind the dusty lappy theory ! lol I would be surprised if the laptop has the ability to customize it's internal cooling fans cooling profile, but I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. That being said I might look to a quality cooling base and that could minimize the fans intrusion.

I'd monitor the CPU cycles in Task Manager>Processes, clicking on CPU column heading to order them.

If something is hogging RAM it can cause this, trace it by rightclicking the Process to open it in Services. You can drill down deeper and more specifically using Process Monitor as shown in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 .

I'd also establish a Clean Boot and other steps to tame preinstalled bloatware from Clean Up Factory Bloatware .

This should give you some things to work on to gather clues and become more familar with your new PC. You can also use Tech Support included Free from one year. If you can't resolve it I'd return it to the store for another, or have Tech Support RMA it for replacement.

Theres nothing hogging CPU or ram in the task manager...CPU doesnt even go past 10% when doing web browsing.

Theres no pre-installed programs, laptop didnt even have a OS when i got it. Although i did install drivers off the driver CD...

I doubt whether it would affect this but its best to let Win7 supply the drivers by running all rounds of Important and Optional Window Updates after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3).

Then import any missing drivers from the PC or device's Support Downloads webpage, since the driver disk is dated as soon as its pressed.

Yea that doesn't really help :(

What about the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7? It shows how to go over your Win7 with a fine-tooth comb and almost always turns up issues to resolve, shows how to resolve them.

It could also be normal for the CPU, or it could be a lemon that would not do this if you replace it. If it bothers you I'd consider taking it back, or at least consulting the maker's included tech Support as I suggested earlier.

"The CPU fan keeps revving up every few minutes for a couple of seconds and then down again. I only have light applications like microsoft word and firefox open...."

My 18-month old Sony I7 8GB laptop does a similar thing. I can't tell specifically if it's the CPU fan. But some fan revs up when I use my PaleMoon x64 browser to open up multiple tabs. Once most of the tabs are opened completely, the revs are gone. The taskmanager doesn't show anything untoward when it happens. My Norton Internet Security 2013 doesn't warn me of high CPU activity. I don't use any other browser to test if their opening of tabs would do the same.

Without any expertise, in my case, I'm guessing it's a function of security scanning and the nVidia processing of graphical data for the browser. Not knowing any better, I accepted the "cost".

I would uninstall the Norton Bloatware which causes many issues to see what happens with a lightweight AV like Microsoft Security Essentials with the Win7 firewall.

If you still have the original Sony factory preinstall that is a corrupt install to begin with, larded with bloatware and useless duplicate utilties which have better versions built into Win7, throttle Win7's native performance. That's why most tech enthusiasts won't even run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Nope. I'd return it for a refund.
New means new means working properly. If it doesn't it shouldn't be the buyer's problem.
