CPU Heat Warning Tone: Where is it coming from? (I5 750 & Asus P7P55D)

I've been playing with overclocking my Intel i5 750 on a Asus P7P55D Pro. At one point today I was running temps up around 63c while running Prime and I started to hear a constant, piercing tone, like some kind of warning.

It was not coming from the system audio because it continued when I turned off the speakers.

When I killed the Prime test and temps went down, it stopped.

While doing this test, I was also running Speedfan and Core Temp.

Does this Mobo have a warning tone? I can't find anything about it in BIOS. I also checked Speedfan and Core Temp and I don't see anything in their settings about a warning tone. I see a warning pop-up option in Core Temp, and a shutdown option, but nothing about a noise.

If it was coming from a program like Core Temp, wouldn't it come through the system audio?

That's why I was thinking the board itself had a warning?

Anyone know where the noise is coming from? 63c isn't really hot enough for a warning is it?

63 is not that high for your CPU. However, you should never use 2 temp monitoring programs at the same time. Both reading the same sensors can cause false readings. Core temp does have a warning if you set it. I'm not familar with your board, so can't answer some of your questions, but most modern CPUs and boards have a fail safe shut down that will shut the computer down if the CPU gets overheated, to protect it from damage.

Thanks for the reply, and the advice about not running two monitors. I was running two because I was comparing them, but they were giving different readings, so...there you go.

I am aware of the shutdown feature. That is set to shut things down at 90c I think. I'm a long way from there.

I'm hoping I can get rid of this horrible piercing beep. I can't tell where its coming from.

If your mobo has a system speaker, (or your case has one), the noise could have been coming from there. If so, your BIOS is telling you that your chip is too hot. That may or may not be correct, but there may be an alarm set in BIOS for over temp. Some boards have alarms.

Just a thought, but that could be what it is.

My two cents worth I had just the same problem with a cooler bracket that had cracked and allowed the CPU to get too hot all I got was a repetitive five very shrill beeps and a small light alongside the CPU socket lighting up.

Never thought to check the lights on the mobo. Good call.

I was wondering how I would know if it was CPU warning or something else. Does the Ram have a warning too?

I'll open the case and run the test and see if anything lights up when the beep starts.

Thanks
