CPU Overheat warning

Hi

If I enable smart fan control in BIOS and start up Windows, the overheat warning tone sounds. It only sounds at 70C or over.
When the BIOS setup is booted, the CPU temp is around 45 to 50C idle. It never goes below 40 but that might be okay. No warning goes off, only when I boot windows, right at the boot screen. It keeps loading but just when the welcome screen should appear the computer freezes and I have to reset it.


Motherboard: ABIT VA-10
CPU: AMD Athlon 2 Ghz (K7 series)
Smart fan control: with 60% or 70% minimum speed and 40 C target temp

I'm not sure if it's really overheating since I have no way to check if the temp goes really that high. Since it freezes right away (which is an alarming thing itself) and I can't open the Core Temp monitor program or anything.


I installed Speedfan and I started playing around with the fan control. Temps do not seem to get high if I drop the fan speed lever to 60% nor does the warning go off, but the computer is idle. I'll test it under load just in a few seconds..

Do you think this might be false warning or do you think I should reapply thermal paste?

Update: This is a desktop PC
I reapplied the thermal paste but and temps got lower but that warning still sounds.

It might be a good idea to reapply the paste, but be aware that it's a complicated job on a laptop, and there is a good chance that you could break your laptop. It might be best to have that done by a qualified technician.

Also, if it were me, I would not mess around with the fan control on a laptop. It does what it does for a reason, and there are algorithms and routines (that are far smarter than we are) running the show to keep it from overheating.

Lastly, are your ports blocked by dust? Or are you running the lappy on a soft surface, such as a bed? That can cause overheating.

Is your ABIT VA-10 motherboard the one that came with the Laptop?

I just read the specs again. I don't think the OP is talking about the laptop...

No it's not a laptop. It's a desktop PC.

Thanks for the ideas guys, reapplying the thermal paste helped a lot, temps got lower! Although that warning tone still sounds. I'm not sure why.

That warning tone must not be real... I just tried reducing the fan speed with SpeedFan, and the warning didn't sound and the temps didn't really go up (only a degree or two maybe).
But if I leave that auto fanspeed thing on in the bios that warning siren sounds every bootup. It makes no sense. Any ideas?

Did you load BIOS defaults yet?

Maybe CPU fan doesn't start spinning right away and you get the warning tone in that time? Can you visually check the fan?
