Main way to prevent it from happening is to make sure that the computer has been running before removing the heatsink, that way the thermal paste/pad is warm and more pliable.

That's happened to me, AMD AM3 socket. An old Dell. I was trying to flip the heat shroud back. The heat sink with the CPU stuck to it went with it. I had to straighten out a few pins along one edge of the CPU but I got it all working again. The old thermal past was like glue. I had to use a small screw driver to separate the CPU from the heat sink.

You should have twisted the heat sink back and forth to break the seal.

I`ve done the same thing.

Live and learn.

But in no way should that have caused a problem.

I think it would be a good time now to either use this information for a tut on what not or what to do in this situation pretty much cut out the fact that it was someone else's thread because it's obvious he abandoned it already

Good idea in theory Solar but mate it would cause an avalanche of differing ideas on how thermal compounds should be applied and what compounds should be used.

Have seen in the past threads in here and other forums that are littered with all sorts of ideas and techniques and some that cause strife and tedious debates on the subject. Best left as Gary says and just Google and see the different methods and make ones own mind up.

Well, it does happen. Some thermal compounds could be used as glue. I did it to an old AMD rig once, but it caused no damage. I learned to heat the CPU up before removing the heatsink. Makes it much easier. Maybe thermal compounds have improved today where they don't stick as bad, but I still heat the CPU up first.
