Solved Cpu selection for rig

i'd be using this for
video editing
audio recording/editing
mid-level pc gaming
a lot of files organizing.
main computer.


which would be better the fx amd 6100 95w (why is it only 95w?)

or

the deneb 975 3.6ghz AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition Deneb 3.6GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ975FBGMBOX

?


I was set on the 6100 zambezi but then someone said some tech thing I didn't understand and now uncertain.

the fx amd 6100 is the better processor for you, as it has more cores so can handle multi tasking and editing better... however it isnt a good processor either way, the new range of bulldozer processors are very poor in comparison to intels core i5's which are the same cost but vastly out perform them.

if your building a rig from scratch id go intel. AMD have failed badly on there attempt to rival intels current chips.

While I like AMD I too would say get an Intel i52500k since you could overclock the crap out of it. They will handle memory a lot better than any AMD chip can at the moment as well.

95W is AMD's attempt at lower-powered chips and higher max temps.

that's just opinion. you dropped money on intel, so you support that. I am focusing on amd (likely) and therefore read up on the positive reviews of amd. your input is pure opinion and it's toxically misleading b/c you present it as fact. Many people doing high-end computer tasks that speak the best of amd.

I saw a vid and I think amd overlocked a consumer level chip at over 8ghz, setting a guiness world record.

obviously the i5 ranked slightly higher. I am pretty certain I will do the 6100 if I go amd, uncertain about intel though. Still not sold on it. Nevertheless. VERY helpful benchmarks for comparison. thanks profdlp!

this may change, but although I've been learning/researching about computers for quite some time, this is the first rig I build from scratch. so....advanced overclocking isn't much of a concern (but that may change). From what I've heard the 6100 amd and intel can overclock well.

This IS a clutch purchase because it will decide the mobo and whatnot.

Finally, the tone of some responses/replies were helfpul and objective others were just spewing opinion I am not interested in a which is better amd v intel thread. I genuinely just want to make the best decision purchase. It's taken me many many months to save up and get these parts (a part every 1-2 months). I've doubted this at times and just thought about using the old laptop or if I move I wondered what I'd do with the rig (bring it likely, possibly sell) anyways I really want to build this and it's taken awhile and once I decide on mobo or cpu then it will be easy to get the remaining parts. In a sense the mobo or cpu is the only choice left for components.

I also feel this thread is lacking impartiality because well it sounds like most replies are from people with intel chips. If more amd people responded, might be helpful. All newegg reviews i read of amd are exceptional.

None at all, all CPUs will work with most any software/hardware available.

cool. helpful and understandable explanation. The i5 I'm slightly considering is the same, 95w though. I definitely like green (low wattage) things.

Cores per se are occasionally a factor, but not for most users with most tasks.

I didn't want to post directly to that forum/thread because most those people seem like they know what they're doing and are just posting the OC specs instead howto questions.

cpu-z and asrock extreme tuning utility were two applications I saw showing the speeds. Are those shareware? is cpu-z a standard/main app for testign oc speeds.

as regards to the amd/intel; I saw a good mix of really fast cpus from both chip brands/companies.

I look forward to tacking up my cpu stats on that thread after getting my rig built!


lol I also jokingly checked out the low end cpu (furthest to the right) of those benchmark charts and joked that those cpus are probably 20 bucks....but they are/were! What would anyone ever use a $20 cpu for? would those even operate on current OSes?

If I had limitless money/funds that I could drop on my pc rig parts, I would likely almost certainly get some heinously expensive intel cpu. But....I don't have that financial situation. Intel vs AMD was helfpul and I am still keen on amd. I don't want this thread to be about convincing me to get some chip or not.

CPU-Z is a free download. I'd guess the Asrock thing is provided with Asrock motherboards.

CPU-Z isn't a benchmarking application to test speeds. It just shows you certain settings and values. It's good for what it does, but it doesn't test anything.

You're welcome John. The ASRock overclocking utility is provided by ASRock on their mobo CDs, ASUS has a similar one. I didn't find it to be useful, it overclocks on the fly without entering BIOS, but didn't seem to work with me.
The AMD CPUs do have the adavantage of being interchangeable in AM2-AM3+ sockets but have different functionality with each one. Intel has 4 different active sockets at the moment, again with different functions. Just futher info.
