Very recently I started to here some weird noise coming from my computer, and then my 2.80ghz processor dropped to 2.66 and again to 2.13.

I knew something was wrong when I saw my temperature at boot was 70 celsius, and it was rising to 80 in about 20 seconds! And rising to 100 in 2 minutes

And I have no idea why it decided to become so hot because my fan is running at 1800 rpm so can someone please help!

Thanks!

Is that the temperature as reported by the BIOS, or by a 3rd party program? Either way, it seems a bit excessive. As regards the speed drops, this is normal and is a mechanism that is built-in to many motherboards and processors to limit damage caused by excess heat (higher speed = more heat).

Check the CPU fan. Is it actually spinning? Just because it is reported as spinning, it doesn't mean that it is as the motor may be spinning but the fan blades aren't. Are the fan blades damaged or impeded in any way? Could there be an accumulation of dust on the heatsink/fan, preventing them from working efficiently? Could the TIM (Thermal Interface Material) want replacing?

Sorry, couldn't resist. When you look at the motherboard - it's next to the ram. It's easy to spot.

If it's a stock heatsink fan and they are spinning - check there is not a large amount of dust on the blades etc.

And don't pull the thing off - you need to apply fresh thermal paste when you remove the heatsink and replace it.

It risen to 45 while I typed that line
Fan speed 1300

50c already 1400

It continues to rise to 55 and 1600rpm

The rising has slowed down but it goes up 1c every 15sec

60c 1700

Are you getting sufficient airflow through your system? An obstruction with the inlet of fresh air can cause a rise in internal temperature.

I would recommend removing the heatsink and fan and replacing the thermal compound, and if your running a stock cooler and are comfortable enough with having to remove the mother board I would definitely get an aftermarket cooler.
Speedfan is reporting temps not in the critical area but a little to wacky temp1 -55c? temp 2 -2c?

You could also try removing the side cover and using a household fan and blowing air into your case to see if lowers the temps if not then your definitely going to need to do something with your cooler on your CPU.

Phantom readings. Speedfan reports everything the sensor chip supports where there is a sensor attached or not, and just needs to be removed from showing in the configuration settings,.

Just out of interest is there a difference between a core and a cpu

The the number of cores work together to make up one CPU. Each core can process a seperate function or work together in unison in the CPU. In this case you CPU has two cores.

The CPU temp is the overall temp of the entire CPU whereas the core temps are the individual temps of each core.

Hope this helps.

Vatec,
The Cores will throttle up and down independently.

And I wouldn’t pull off your CPU cooler unless you have thermal grease or compound on hand to reapply.
Thermal grease - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is not recommended using old grease.

Out of curiosity, what case are you using?
