Hi,

The CPU in my PC (upgraded to Win 7 Home Premium x 64) Dell OPTIPLEX 520 is (Pentium D 2.8GHz) old and slow. The MoBo model Dell 0RJ290.
What CPU with max. performance is acceptable for this MoBo, if at all?
My goal is to speed up my PC on the cheap. Would Microsoft require a new product key or refuse giving out one, or the present key will suffice?
Thank you
barsim

You aren't going to want to hear this, but no new CPU in that system will make much of a difference.......and I doubt you will be able to "feel" any difference at all IF you can find parts for it. Time to save up for a new build that you will be happy with instead of sinking money into an old computer that won't be any better off than when you started.

You need to go to dell.com, check your specs and see if an upgrade is possible, as Kbrad says, it`s probly slim to none, but you can always upgrade a Pentium D. You can find 1 on Ebay.

I have a 3.0 and a 3.2 so it`s definetly doable. Not sure what the highest D is. And you will notice a difference, have you maxed the memory yet ?

You already have the fastest CPU that this motherboard can take.

And you aren't going to want to hear an agreement OP.

Your upgrade route is at an end.

The good news is that you don't have to spend a single cent on your current machine. The bad news is an improvement is going to be more expensive than you'd hoped because it would require a minimum of RAM, CPU and mobo.

As for Windows Activation, a new CPU makes no difference. A new mopbo+CPU yes, it does but then you simply ring MS up and do a phone activation.

Unless it's an OEM copy, which this one is. I mean, it's against the OEM EULA.

yes, but if you phone them during phone activation and explain there is a good chance that they simply give you another code anyway. Hey, it's their stuff after all.

Was discarded by previous owner due to "horrible performance".
Was running Win Xp from a IDE drive. Yeah. Was a pain.
SATA II drive and Win7 and it zips away! Yay!
Well being that this is SevenForums, I'm not willing to support doing that. Maybe I would in PMs, but I won't say that I would for sure. Let's just say that I learned the hard way.

Hey, I didn't say "call MS and blatantly lie about your stuff, they will never find out bwahahahah" (also because it is not true, they can easily find out).
I know of people that explained the situation honestly and got another activation code even if it was technically a violation of EULA for their OEM license.

Still, what do mods/admins have to say about this? It's their site after all.

Yeah, but the representatives on the phone aren't supposed to do it when it is an OEM Product Key.
