CPU upgrade

Hi guys,
I currently have bought new cpu but for some reason system does not want to start. What could be wrong? I have changed information in bios and also upgraded it to latest version. When stick old cpu back and change details in bios for old cpu, everything allright.
I calculate power usage, seems allright.

My old system:
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H ver1.0
AMD Phenom II x2 550
2x2gb Corsair 1333Mhz + 2x1Gb Corsair 1600Mhz
Ati Radeon HD5750
PSU 650W

New system is the same apart of cpu which is AMD Phenom II x4 965

Did you upgrade the bios before removing the X2 processor?

well... i put x4 first, it did not lunch windows so i remember that i need to upgrade bios so put x2 back. upgrade with x2 installed then put x4 back. its still not loading windows.

i have just managed to lunch system on two cores only, disabling other two cores in bios but it is not guaranteed start. once allright another 2 times would not start. I am completely lost.

Some people here have said that a clean install or at least re-install of windows 7 is needed with a CPU change and for sure when you throw in a new mobo which I understand isn't the case here. What do others think, regarding this?

i disable core 2 and core 3. core 0 and core 1 are enabled. will try to reinstall win tomorrow hope it help.
how you normally know that cpu is bad? never had any bad ones before, i dont know how to check it.

I swapped from an Asus P5Q Pro, Q6600, and 8GB DDR to an i7 870, Asus P7P55D-E, and 8GB DDR3 2 weeks ago and Windows booted right up, found the new hardware, rebooted a few times and I was good to go.
My Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit install is 15 months old now and runs great.

My brother did the same thing 2 weeks ago as well.
AMD quad core to an AMD 6 core and motherboard swap as well and his booted up just fine too.

Try disabling cores 0 and 1 instead of 2 and 3, and boot the system.

Im not sure it matters but, once when I upgraded from a dual to a quad it installed the new drivers for the CPU automatically at 1st boot.

In my device manager, It had listed 4 CPUs as it should, but 2 were the old Core 2 duo, and 2 were the new Quad for whatever reason.

I fixed by simply un-installing all 4 of the CPU drivers, re-booting and letting it re-install them all.
it then showed all 4 as the new Quad.

Although a very minor issue, there were no other issues or need to re-install the OS however.

So, NO.
I do not think a re-installation of the OS would be required for a CPU upgrade.

there is no option to disable core 0. but i have tried to disable/enable other core. same idea would lunch with 2 cores but not with four.
device manager can recognise cpu correctly but it shows only processors as i can only boot system with any 2 cores.

I'd look at what Whishmater suggested.

I think pointing the finger at the CPU being faulty is a little premature at this stage.

now, after safe mode i boot system with all 4 cores active. everything is allright.
anyone knows where was the problem? is it some drivers sit uncorrectly at first time? just to know in future.
