CPU upgrade

Currently I have an Intel coreI5 at 3.2GH and was wondering if i could upgrade to the 2nd generation.

Of course you can. How much money are you willing to spend? What is the exact model of your motherboard? I'm quite sure that the 2nd generation i5's use a 1155 Socket while the original model used a 1156.

It would also help to know what type of i5 CPU you have. For example, i5 2500, i5 2500k etc. You say your processor is 3.2Ghz so I'm assuming it's the i5 650.
Without buying a new motherboard with a 1155 socket, you can't upgrade.

Your description is probably of the i5-650, socket 1156.
No, you cannot do an upgrade without changing to a socket 1155 motherboard.

What would you want to upgrade to....the performance gain likely wouldn't be huge? Is there something that you are currently doing that is a struggle?

I would have thought there's not much difference between then 1st and 2nd generation. Sure, the clock speed increases in some models but that's about it.

The second generation can be easily overclocked to a much higher frequency than the first generation. But there are major advanatages besides that. Two majors are that the chipsets' SATA is much faster and can run SSD drives at their full potential and the PCI-e is faster. You should get an all around better performance.

So I would turn this around and say you would want to upgrade your motherboard, the CPU coming along for the ride if you don't overclock.
