Hi folks,
Quick question:
I'm looking to buy a used PC but it doesn't come with any OS disks. Should I steer clear?
Thanks

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Sadly, a lot of new computers do not come with an OS installation disc - so there might not be one to pass along to you with the sale. You can ask the seller if they will send you the info requested in this post: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ne-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html - then we might be able to tell you a bit about the computer.

If the operating system is using a legit OEM license, then you can download a disc from the link in this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/85813-windows-7-universal-installation-disc-create.html

You need to find out from the seller if he has the 25 character "Product Key" that comes with every legit copy of Windows. Also ask the seller if he made "recovery disks" (not the same as an installation disk) if this is a PC manufactured by a major supplier like Dell, Acer, or HP.

If you have that product key, you can make your own installation disc and install and activate from it.

If you don't have that key, you may be limited to just doing a "restore" or "recovery" if that capability is still available on the PC. That is different from a "clean install" and would only restore the PC to the configuration it was in when it left the manufacturer. A restore or recovery requires a set of recovery disks (typically made by the first owner) or access to a hidden partition on the hard drive, placed there at the time of manufacture.

The Product Key is what you pay the money for when you buy a valid Windows installation disc. The disc itself can be legally downloaded at no charge.

If the PC is from a major brand like HP, Lenovo, or Dell, the Product Key should be on a sticker somewhere. It's in this format: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.

If the PC is home-built, you have to hope the builder wrote the key down and can pass it along to you.

OK, I've got the PC. Woohoo!

There is no COA sticker anywhere. It fires up just fine. (I've just made a "Repair Disc Windows 7 64-bit")
Looks like I'm good to go.

This installation isn't activated, and there is no way to do that - its a volume licence key.

Read : Understanding KMS

Unfortunately you were conned. You need to look elsewhere for a genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8 licence.

If the PC was listed as having Win7 on it, Contact the seller and tell them you've been advised that it has a Volume License key which cannot be used for retail consumer Win7. You will need a Win7 Product key to activate it (after reinstall per the link I gave you earlier) or you should ask for your money back if you dont' want to buy a copy of Win7 (around $89 at Tiger Direct).

If you paid by PayPal then you can get your money back in most cases which involve bootleg software by calling their Customer Service. Let us know what they say.

MS has a program where if you cooperate with an investigation of counterfeit Win7 being sold they may award you with a free copy. You can initiate this via Customer Service.

Well, dang, ain't that sad.
I'll contact the seller and see what he has to say, but I won't be holding my breathe.
On the bright side, at least there is 30 days to think about it.
OK, 29 days.

Thanks for putting me right, folks.

They can`t sell you a pc without a COA on it, and you don`t really want Windows 7 Enterprise, I would return it for a full refund.

Unless you want to buy Windows 7 from a reputable dealer.

Home Premium or Professional is all you need.
