Crash after Updates this morning - DVD8 corrupt

Hello everyone,

My fiance's Sony laptop did a automatic update this morning and since then has not been able to boot. On the first restart it just sat there on the login page thinking.

I am unable to boot into Safe Mode, or any mode for that matter. When I try to I receive a message to run DiskCheck. If I do, it doesn't run it. If I don't I'll get a winlogon.exe corrupt file message telling me that ProgramFiles (x86)\Intervideo\DVD8 is corrupt. I am unable to do a System Restore as I get another error within the first minute or so referencing a memory location.

I'm running the "startup repair" now.

Anything else I can do at this point. I have the disks to do a fresh install but I need the data on here. If I can just get into Windows and save the data that would be awesome.

If you have a win 7 dvd you can boot from it. boot from the dvd, while booting hit shift + F10. In that cmd window you can run the chkdsk /f/r/.

CHKDSK /R /F:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Win7) (winlogon for XP).
Copy/paste the results into your next post.

If you can boot from the dvd you can also do a repair install.

Thank you for the advice.

When the "startup repair" finished a chkdsk on the restart actually completed too it booted once where I grabbed all her data and I got a bunch of "memory ref" errors and it won't boot once again.

Its running a memory diagnostic right now, after I'll give your advice a shot.

I think this is the end. Format & clean install is next.
