HP G62-234DX laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). OS was freshly reinstalled last week.

For the past month or so, I've had no sound output from speakers or headphone jack, and attempting to go into sleep mode has resulted in an instant shutdown no matter how sleep mode is started (via Start menu or by closing the lid.)

I suspect the problem is related to the audio problem, because I had it do the same thing booted into Ubuntu from a live CD. The sound card appears to be functioning normally inside Windows (it's configurable, the mixer indicates it's playing) and I have sound over HDMI, but the onboard speakers and headphone jack don't work.

The BIOS on this machine won't let me configure anything or I'd just disable the on-board audio entirely and see if that fixes it. As it stands right now, trying to uninstall the sound card just results in it reinstalling on my next reboot.

I'm open to any suggestions, advice or voodoo curses anyone has to recommend.

What happens if you disable the sound card instead of uninstalling it? Does that help with the sleep issues?

To disable:
1. Click Start Menu
2. Right click My Computer
3. Click Manage
4. Select Device Manager from the left pane
5. Go to Sound, video and game controllers
6. Select the device that is not part of your HDMI system
7. Right click that device and select disable

I will look through your attachment while awaiting your answer.

You are having issues with your Visual C++ Redistributable installation(s). Recommend reinstalling all Visual C++ Redistributables and their updates (both the x64 and x86 versions).

Visual C++ Redistributables 2005, 2008, 2010 are available online to download and install in both versions.

Disabling has had no effect (that was my first step.) I only managed to keep it from crashing when unattended by disabling sleep mode entirely in Power Management.

Alright, try this:

1. Download and install Driver Sweeper
2. Download the latest driver from HP for your audio device
3. Click Start Menu
4. Right Click My Computer
5. Click Manage
6. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
7. Click the + next to Sound, video and game controllers

9. Click Uninstall
10. Check the box to Delete driver software for the device if there is one
11. Click OK
12. Restart your computer in safe mode
13. Run Driver Sweeper, select Realtek - Sound drivers, analyze, clean

Also if the above does not work and you have not tried the following:

Note: backup any files if you are using a RAID controller of any kind.
1. Go into your BIOS and load default settings to clear the CMOS memory.
2. Save Settings and exit the BIOS.
3. Shut down and turn off the computer.
4. Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
5. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to clear the software connections between the BIOS and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
6. (If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall.
7. Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware, and post back how it runs.

Tried all these suggestions and no change. System does a shutdown/reboot when you try to suspend it and still no sound.

Less than a week after a fresh install? Seriously?

It can happen, though it is highly unlikely.

If the behavior has been constant through before and after the fresh install, though, I would think it is a hardware issue. Unfortunately, the only method for fixing that is to send it in to HP and have them replace the motherboard. There may be some workarounds for what you want, though. I am trying to look into it for you.

Disable Automatically Installing a Driver on Startup

Another option is to find the .sys file(s) associated with the Realtek driver (use driver sweeper to find their names through Realtek - Sound) and go into C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename all of the Realtek sound driver found .sys files to .bak (instead of .sys). You will also need to disable windows updates from finding the files online. To do so:

1. Click Start Menu
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click System and Security
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced System Settings
6. Respond appropriately to any UAC popups
7. Click the Hardware Tab
8. Click Device Installation Settings
9. Set yours as mine is in my attached screenshot.
