Crash but no crash? Graphics reverting. Errors: x124 and x9c. w/Dump

DUMP: http://www.sevenforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=239693&stc=1&d=1351890244

First off:
MB: Asrock Extreme 6 Z77
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600
CPU: Intel 3770K IB
SSD: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB
PSU: Corsair HX Series HX750 750W
Monitor: COBY 32" 1080p Tv (VGA in)
Graphics: MSI GTX660ti Power Edition / Overclock Edition
O/S: Win 7 Ultimate 64

Something is up with my display. This just started happening recently. I have had this system (self built) about 1 month and this has been happening for about a week now.

About a week ago, I came home from work and all of my icons looked bigger than normal and my resolution was low - it looked as though I had no graphics driver installed at all. I restarted my system and everything went back to normal. The next day I came home from work, same thing, restarted and back to normal...

This has been happening just about every day and I can't figure out why it's happening. There are no errors that I can see because I'm catching it after the fact. I don't THINK it's restarting when this happens and there doesn't appear to be any new crash dump files created. For example - this happened yesterday and today, but the date of the most recent dump file is 10-30-2012. I am not convinced the error codes I have listed in the description are related to this since this happened today and whocrashed didn't show anything related with error codes (that I can see). Most recently (today) I tried reinstalling my graphics drivers to see if that helps...

The thing each of these instances seems to have in common is I'm away from the PC for long periods of time. Something that happens when the PC tries to sleep perhaps? Although, if this is true, it's not consistent because this morning before I left for work it was fine (which means it did ok all night) but when I came home from work, there it was again... Also, my PC NEVER actually sleeps. Always on. I have it set on Balanced in the power options. Any thoughts?

Welcome aboard.

You first uninstall the following programs

  • Magic ISO
  • Magic Disc
Then Free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept the restart.
And report us back. Is it still crashing?

EDIT: Do it, too.

Trying it now. Thank you! I'll report back if crashing continues.

Edit: Done. I grabbed the driver you specified although newer drivers were available. Too bad about MagicDisk. Its a disk drive emulator so I can mount iso's. I don't have an actual disk drive to burn isos to disk so this was a solution. Is there a preferred disk emulator?

Now we wait...

thx

It happened again. I woke up to the resolution being at 1024x768. No new dump files that I am seeing and I have it configured to do a complete dump. Also, all of the things I had open are still open so I know the system didn't crash and restart. I don't get it... Dump file included...

I have it set to run a complete dump so would there still be a mini dump? After the last dump I uploaded, I wiped the old mini dump files so I could be sure that I was seeing the most recent dump. No new dump files were created, so maybe it's not a crash? Plus the files I had open were still open when I checked this morning. I'm just hoping it's not a hardware issue with my card...

OK, wait and see if it crashes again. Then let us know.

I also wish it is not a hardware issue.

So an actual crash is the only way you can begin to find a solution? The graphics reverted to 1024x768, so it was a form of a crash. Could a hardware issue cause this to happen?

thx

Edit: I noticed I have Intel igfxtray.exe and igfxpers.exe running at startup. Are those graphics related and could they be causing a conflict?

thx

igfxtray.exe is nothing that serious, it is just a tray icon for intel graphics.

BTW, dont you use nvidia display? Follow it....

I'd have to agree with Arc. It doesn't appear that Event Viewer maintains any info about screen resolution. It's possible that some other software (maybe 3rd party) would record such info but I'm not aware of it. I guess another possibility would be if a restore point had been manually created when the screen resolution was changed.

One thing to try if you haven't done already is to disable the on-chip Intel HD Graphics 4000, IGPU in your UEFI. Disable Virtu too it attempts to SLI the HD4000 and the GPU card.

This may help if you have further issues:
Try these steps to install only the graphics driver.

1.Download the preferred driver and save it to the desktop.
2.Double click the installer and you will see a screen where it will be extracted to, change that to your desktop.
3.Open Device Manager through Control Panel.
4.Expand Display adapters and right click the name for yours and choose Update Driver\Browse my Computer. Select the driver folder you just saved on the desktop. Click Next.
5. Your system should say "Windows has successfully updated your driver software".

If you get a window saying you already have the most current driver, go back to step 4 and choose Uninstall Driver software instead. Then restart from step 3.
