The setup is an Asus Notebook N54J, 4GB, 500Gb HDD. I have had intermittent
BSOD since I bought this computer last December.

I was just surfing the net 5 days ago when BSOD appeared. This time, I could
not boot up at all.

I took out the HD and hook it up to a SATA to USB cable and the HD could be read
so I transferred most of the data that I could find.

I have been reading stuff in the forum the last several days to gather ideas.

I tried the F8 advanced boot option. In the recovery process, the BSOD appeared
again.

I suspected Hardware problem so I downloaded memtest86 and sure enough, there are errors all over the place.

However, I can't not even read the hard disk now (after I hook it up to a SATA to USB cable). My other computer treats it as an unrecognized HD and asks me if I want to format it.

At this point, is there anyway to repair this HD to make it readable without losing
data?

Thank you.

I used another SATA reader and can mount the HD now. However, certain folders are still locked;
e.g., Documents and Settings, Config.Msi, Recovery, System Volume Information, etc.
Even though I logged in as system administrator on the replacement computer, I still can not access the contents of this HD. Any suggestions?

At this point, I plan to give the Asus notebook back to Asus for a good hardware check to find
out which RAM stick went awry and reformat the HDD after I get as much info off the HDD as possible.

I have been reading the contents of the forum randomly. If anybody has suggestions for reinstalling the system and useful utilities to install into the new system, I will appreciate it.
I have already read the section on macrium (for imaging the hd for back up purpose).
Any thing to reduce the frequency of BSOD occurring in the future is appreciated.

Benson
