Hello everyone,

Here's the problem. My Dell Inspiron 1764 just started crashing every time I put it into standby. Screen will go blank, as expected. But, the HD will continue to spin for about 5 min, then the machine shuts down. It does this most times if I hibernate as well.

Here's the catch. If I reboot and don't connect to a wifi network, it will standby and hibernate just fine. Once it's been connected, even if I disconnect after, it will crash in standby.

What's been tried so far:

  • Full disk check
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled all network drivers
  • Replaced the offending files from a good working win 7 machine (see below)
  • Full virus scan in safe mode

Here's the basic info from the minidump:

I'm in the final lap of a big project -- and this is really causing frustrations. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

you've done some good trouble shooting

Are there any differences if you are on battery or on ac adapter?

Have you updated with latest BIOS?

Try disabling hibernation completely, and just use the standby feature and see if it helps.

Check these very detailed instructions on t/s power options: Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems - Vista Forums

Also a very good tip would be to uninstall and reinstall your video drivers with latest.

OK -- I tried all those suggestions and it's still crashing.

Given it will sleep properly if I don't connect to wi-fi -- I'm guessing that points to something in network services. Correct?

Any suggestions and where to go next? Is the raaastp.sys any assist in pointing a direction? I did replace this file to see if it was corrupted -- but that didn't fix the prob.

Also, if it's any help -- this problem occurred after I installed and uninstalled ad-aware antivirus. I wonder if it corrupted something in the registry. I tried reinstalling it to see if that may fix the prob -- but no go.

I'm really not looking forward to doing a Windows reinstall if I don't have to.

Big thanks,

M

Have you disabled Hybrid sleep? Do this in the power options control panel.

Also, go into device manager and double click your WLAN card. Go to the power options tab and uncheck everything there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did already disable hybrid sleep -- and I just went to WLAN > Power Options and unchecked everything. Sadly, same issue.

I finally decided it's time for a full backup/reinstall. Spring cleaning. I'm pretty certain that will take care of the issue.

writhziden,

Sorry -- my communication wasn't clear enough. I appreciate the offer for assistance. I just realized that even I did fix the problem -- a clean install would feel good -- speed things up -- clear out some unwanted baggage.

I'll definitely post if I'm still having probs.

Thanks for the assist.

M

Understood. I wasn't really upset, just joking around, mostly. ;) It is actually refreshing to have someone willing to do a clean install.

The fresh install can resolve so many problems, but most people do not like having to go through the time of re-installing programs and setting up their themes, etc. I understand both sides, but if it were me, I'd rather go through the slow process of getting things back where I like them for a few weeks than struggle with issues for a few weeks not knowing whether the troubleshooting steps will even resolve the problems.
