Hi all
Instead of PAYING to use some proxies I have a FAST Internet connection at home (fast UP as well as 20 mb DOWN) so I'm thinking of running my OWN server as a VPN.

It has an Internet accessible IP address -- and would also be used by local CLIENT computers in the house (internal network).

RDP was one idea but this has THREE problems

1) Ports at the REMOTE end - for example in your workplace are sometimes blocked - so it's not possible unless you try some manipulative tunneling

2) ACTIVE-X needs to be available - even if you don't use the web browser method of connection. Some workplaces bar the use of this as well so no go.

3) you need to port forward to ONE specific IP address on your LOCAL LAN.

With a VPN presumably you connect to the server and if you've set it up correctly all your desktop Internet programs would work just as they do "normally" with the added functionality of any services your VPN can provide.

Client computers are Window 7 machines -- I'm thinking of using a currently running Windows 2003 server system as the VPN machine or maybe a W2008 server (I'm a technet suscriber this this won't cost me an arm and a leg).

Maybe even something like Windows Home server might do the trick --the basic idea is really to use the VPN as a Proxy.

Anybody got any decent links as to how to set this up. I'm definitely NOT a network guru although I can meddle around with OS'es etc.

Cheers
jimbo
