when you click send to-> desktop (create shortcut) it will automatically create shortcut on the desktop and NOT copy the file to desktop. is there another way to make it create shortcut to for example D:\shortcut

the desktop create shortcut has extension .DeskLink

It may be possible, but usually not necessary. If I want a short cut in lets say, a folder in favorites. I make a short cut. Go to the file that I want to have the shortcut, make it full 1/2 the screen and just drag. Simple enough.

Drag + "Alt" key

If you hold the "Alt" key, when dragging a file with the mouse, it will create a shortcut in the destination folder, instead of copying or moving the file.

man I must be getting really dumb ,but this make no sense to me ,you say click ,send to desktop create short cut ,but then say it didn't copy the file to desktop just shortcut ,well the way I see it that's what its suppose to do ,if you want to move the file to desktop ,use copy/past or ,if you only want it on the desktop use cut and paste ,what am I missing

Custom DeskLink function

the original OP enquired about adding a custom-sendto context-menu entry - like using "Desktop (create shortcut)".

If you just want to be able to use a sendto-entry with always-send-shortcut behaviour (like .DeskLink), I think you need to set the DropEffect, and add a junction.

For christantoan (and his D:\shortcut example) you would add (to D:\shortcut\desktop.ini) DefaultDropEffect=4 to the newly created [.ShellClassInfo] section, just above [LocalizedFileNames]

You would then create a Junction in your sendto folder, ie

C:\Users\christantoan>cd/d "C:\Users\christantoan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo"
C:\Users\christantoan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo>mklink /J "Shortcuts" "D:\Shortcut"

That's it.

You can't (just) use alt as a singled-modifier (unless you use the mouse/CTRL modifier).
If you just wanna send links, CTRL+SHIFT is the same as Alt (except pressing at the last moment of the move/copy/link operation will not abort the operation... plus (personally) it's easy to remember shift=move,ctrl=copy,ctrl+shift=createLink.

To each their own, I guess. Hope this helps anyone that 'just' wants custom DeskLinks
