What are you trying to burn? A cd or dvd? A data or DVD video disc? Nero is probably not liking the video codec within that .avi.

In that case, you can re-encode it. But I think Nero has the re-encode function too, which I never use so I can not help with that.
I can help with re-encode using alternate tools if you're interested.

Yes please i have waited hour and half to find out that at the end of the encoding in nero it just says wrong disk, i did click on the cd on that one though.

But the rest of the times i went on to the dvd section, nero is some what confusing.

Alright. You want to use Virtualdub to encode the video.

Install ffdshow if you don't have it already.

Basically, in VDub, open the .avi in it. Set the codec it will use by hitting Ctrl+P. I recommend XviD in ffdshow. Choose ffdshow, hit configure. Change the encoder to XviD. Use one pass quality because anything more will be a more difficult and lengthy process. Change the quality number, remembering higher quality = more space. Hit ok twice.

Make sure audio (at top, click it) is on direct stream copy. Make sure video is on full processing mode.

Then go to file | save .avi.

This process may be a trial and error for you since you're new to it. After a few, you'll get really good and be glad you know how to do this.

Let me know if you need anything at all.

lol I wrote my last post before I read you want DVD video disc. That does not apply for that.

Tews' suggestion is probably excellent for that I would imagine.

If you want something else, use TMPGenc 2.5 to encode video to MPEG-2. Use the simple demultiplex function (file | MPEG tools) to extract audio. When video is done and you have audio extracted, use bbMPEG to put them together using DVD standard. If audio is not .ac3, you will have to convert that first to .ac3 or .mp2. (Use .ac3.)

I have the same problem, Nero 9 or Windows DVD Maker will not except any of my AVI files. I am able to convert them using Nero Recode but the files are to large and that is not what i am looking for. So Nero Vision and Windows DVD Maker does what i need it to do make a DVD movie with custom titles and so on.

Does any one have any idea on how to fix this problem?

Thanks,
wilekcmc

DVDs need MPEG-2 video. AVI files do not have MPEG-2 video. Some form of conversion is completely necessary and is not a "problem."

If Nero Recode makes them too big, you can control the process completely with TMPGenc 2.5 instead, to your liking.

ATI Avivo within Catalyst Control Center on basic mode can use your graphics card power to encode also, greatly enhancing the speed. You must install that separately from ATIs site though.

There's a couple of issues here. If you try to just add an .avi file to a DVD using Nero it will probably try to encode it to DVD Video as in having a VIDEO_TS folder. The other issue is, if your stand-alone can play .avi or not. If not, the easiest to use is probably DVD Flick if yes, then just use Imgburn. The third of the 2 issues is, you might need Shark's Windows 7 codec pack. Makes life easier generally.

I have updated my codecs with sharks, that was the first thing i tryed before posting.

As for nero vision, it is design to take, mov, avi mpegs and so on and trans code them into a dvd format like the one you mentioned. Windows DVD maker is also suppose to due the same thing.

There was never any problem doing this until i upgraded to Windows 7, i am not saying its windows fault. There is something wrong and i would like to track it down.

On a second note i tryed using ConvertXtoDVD and it worked fine, but the qualty stinks.

Thaks for helping and posting,

wilekcmc

For quality I don't think you can do much better than HC encoder 2 pass using Best Profile. Both AVStoDVD and FAVC can do this. I bought Nero Ultra 6 when I first started burning CDs and wanted to get a package that did everything. If you go to CD/DVD burning forums I think you'll see most have in common the opinion that you can get freeware that does much better conversion that Nero. DVD Flick as I mentioned has good quality. Try using AVStoDVD but use the Lock Button on the video encoding settings page to force it to use HC 2 pass no matter what the bit rate range. I think you'll see quite good output.

FAVC is faster if you have like a quad core. It can launch a copy of HC for each core. Plus you can just copy and rename the exe file from the latest October HC beta to replace the HC encoder that came with AVStoDVD or FAVC. It kicks ass.

For more info on AVStoDVD go to its thread on the DOOM9 forum. The author is there and is very good about answering questions.
