Solved Creating an image using W7

Something this simple should not be this hard. Trying to image my Win7 C: which has a capacity of 596GB with 89.4 GB Used. The selected backup location is a sata internal drive M: with a capacity of 931GB with 868GB free. I am choosing M: as the destination and during the "preparing to create the backup.." I get the error " There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location" 0x80780119. What am I doing wrong??

This is a guess:

Windows thinks that you have "system" files of some type on some partition other than C.

It is therefore trying to include that partition in the image.

Things like that caused me to use Macrium instead.

I was trying to use Macrium at first and could not get an image restore to work, and then reverted to W7 imaging. Macrium will write an image to any location I choose but am not sure how to restore. I was hoping I could restore it to a different physical disk. It will restore the system reserved to a new disk, but not the W7 OS.?? The "next" button remains greyed out.

You must make a Linux recovery boot disk within Macrium and then boot from that disk to restore an image. I am guessing you have not done this?

You should be able to choose the destination while booted from the Linux disc.

You have to include System Reserved in your image, along with C. Or else make 2 separate images---one of C and one of System Reserved, and then restore both.

If the Linux disc will not boot, you cannot restore. So you need to check that it will boot and see all necessary files and partitions.

There is an excellent tutorial on Macrium by whs including a link to the WindowsPE recovery ISO which is far preferable than the Linux disk. I use Windows inbuilt imaging all the time and also Macrium.
With Macrium you are best using the pe recovery disk rather than the linux disk.
You can download the 1.7GB MS WAIK and Macrium will hold your hand in doing so. If this download is too much for you then have a look at the ISO provided by one of our esteem members, WHS

Thank you very much on the journal tip. I had 68mb used before and now 28mg used. Tried the W7 image again and it went thru without a problem. Also downloaded the WinPE but have not tried it yet.
